Co-written with Ed Snodderly, the idea for the song came to Raines as she was driving by herself through a snowstorm. She reached for a vintage makeup case, saw the words Royal Traveller engraved on the handle and felt the power, and irony, of those words speaking directly to her.

The popularity of Mississippi John Hurt long after his death speaks to the legendary status this remarkable bluesman. His genuine style of playing and smooth, gentle vocals hold up well over time – this is early country blues, a bit more folkier.
Hurt taught himself to play the guitar around the age of nine. He worked as a sharecropper and played at dances, singing to his melody based, fingerpicking accompaniment. Although Hurt never had success as a recording artist, he was recorded by the Library of Congress in 1964 and Hurt is responsible for other Delta bluesman finding recognization and being brought out of retirement. This fueled the folk and blues revival.
Hurt performed at the 1963 Newport Folk Festival which made him more popular in the folk revival and he performed at colleges, concert halls, coffeehouses and even appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. His fans particularly liked the songs “Salty Dog” and “Candy Man”.

The second half of an epic recording session Mississippi John Hurt cut for the Library of Congress on July 15th-23rd, 1963 (the first half is available on D.C. BLUES–THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS RECORDINGS VOL. 1), VOL. 2 reveals all the delights of this legendary bluesman. Though his most essential recordings were waxed in the late ’20s for OKeh, Hurt’s complex, fleet fingerpicking style and gentle, conversational singing were little diminished when the artist was “rediscovered” during the folk and blues revival of the ’60s. Over two discs and 37 tracks, Hurt delivers versions of some of his best-known songs (“Nobody’s Dirty Business,” Stackolee”), spirituals (“Will the Circle Be Unbroken”), and popular songs (“You Are My Sunshine”). Hurt’s soothing, pleasant style of rural blues wears particularly well here; VOL. 2 makes an excellent companion to the first Library of Congress set, and would make a fine addition to any blues collection.

The story behind these sessions is typical for bluesmen of Mississippi John Hurt’s generation. Hurt made some milestone recordings in the late ’20s and then disappeared. He was tracked down by a young blues hound in the early ’60s, at the height of the folk/blues boom. In 1964, Hurt ran through his influential repertoire for a series of recordings by the Library of Congress. This first installment of the series is thick with Hurt classics (“Avalon Blues,” “Candy Man,” “Stackolee”), as well as winningly quirky obscurities like “Let the Mermaids Flirt with Me.” Age had altered neither Hurt’s gentle, genial vocal style nor his nimble country blues fingerpicking.

The band “Salingo” originated in 1998 from a cooperation between the Munich blues guitarist John Saling, to Amon Düül guitarists Chris Karrer (who played the violin), the Polish accordionist Jolanta Sczcelkun and Martina Brück with bass and song in this constellation. With aboard with numerous concerts was Jochen Scheider, an excellent rock drummer and jazz drummer from the Munich environs. The idea was to escape from the stereotype the Gipsy jazz or Balkan tape and to present the varied facets and style directions of the Sinti and Roma’s music to a broader audience.
