At last it is possible to present to the public the first monographic recording of works by Giuseppe Unia, who in the eighteen-sixties could boast the title of “court pianist-composer to His Majesty the King of Italy”, like his better-known colleague Hans von B”ulow, court pianist to Ludwig ii of Bavaria and his friend Alfred Ja”ell, pianist to the King of Hannover. Giuseppe Antonio Unia is one of the many Italian musicians whom history – or, should we say, time – has separated from us with the thin veil of oblivion. Yet his more than two hundred publications for publishers such as Ricordi, Canti and Vismara testify to a considerable degree of success, and the dedications of his works show that his friends were important people, both from a social point of view and from an artistic one. The pianists Massimiliano G’enot and Andrea Vigna Taglianti here are proposing a careful selection of the piano works by Unia, fully reflecting the style and musical taste of Europe of his time, of which he was a profound connoisseur thanks to his numerous artistic experiences in Italy, Paris and Vienna.

Italian jazz pianist Massimiliano Coclite presents Strange People, a collection of deeply personal works which have evolved over time, the album’s concept coalescing during the recording process itself. The musicians collaborating on this release – adding saxophones, bass and drums to Coclite’s piano – share a similar vision of how the music should breathe, creating a soft, spaciousness of sound, drawing the listener into a musical journey of bewitching musical narratives. This is music of mystery, of strangers meeting, of enigmatic feelings hinted at but not always expressed; of introspection and intrigue. A haunting, crepuscular soundworld of seductive, dark-hued beauty.

“Life comes to waves, like the sea”, is said in the 1969 album” Life, friend, is the art of encounter”, by Vinícius de Moraes, Giuseppe Ungaretti and Sergio Endrigo. I was a child in Switzerland, a student in California and a drummer boy on cruise ships, almost always sailing north. In the moments of youth between America and the oceans I wrote these songs, then closed them in a bottle and launched them off. Stubborn, they returned to shore carried by a sea of nostalgia. So, a quarter of a century after thinking about them, I asked to play them to my friend Massimiliano Coclite, on a night when we were stuck at his house by a blizzard, having only his piano, my scores and the gentian. To record the songs I wanted to return to the north, to the Rainbow Studio in Oslo, silent to Massimiliano the emotions that had led me to write them to leave him full freedom to make them his own: a heart transplant that enriched them. In these tracks, I’m playing on a river in Switzerland with my friends, sending sailing boats into a gallery and then celebrating them at the exit. Or that I walk in Los Angeles, permeating the music that marked my adolescence. Or when, sleepless because of the Midnight Sun, I exorcise my doubts about the future by composing on a piano hoisted on the highest deck, while the ship plows the Sea among the fjords. Or while I fear, because beyond the columns of Hercules the stormy sea prevents us from reaching Madeira. If life is the art of encounter, then navigation is the Allegory of life. And friendship is the port that saves us from storms: My Midnight Sun.

Mariinsky Orchestra, Valery Gergiev – Massenet: Don Quichotte (2012) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Italian bass Ferruccio Furlanetto is one of the most sought-after interpreters of French, Italian and Russian repertoire. Here he joins Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky orchestra for a sumptuous recording of Massenet’s final great opera. Gergiev is no stranger to conducting Massenet, having recorded an outstanding performance of ‘Hérodiade’ in 1995 with Renée Fleming and Placido Domingo.

‘Don Quichotte’, Massenet’s comédie-héroïque, is a tale of heroism, adventure and unrequited love. The plot relates only indirectly to the great novel by Miguel de Cervantes and more likely refers to the play Le chevalier de la longue figure, by the poet Jacques Le Lorrain. Massenet, nearing the end of his career, probably identified with the character of Don Quichotte, and fell in love with the mezzo-soprano Lucy Arbell, who played Dulcinée in the first performance of the work.

Praised for his vast range, thundering vocal power, and exceptional acting ability, Ferruccio Furlanetto has performed at the world’s leading opera houses, including La Scala, the Royal Opera House, the New York Metropolitan Opera and the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. His 2011-12 season is dominated by performances of ‘Boris Godunov’ with the Chicago Lyric Opera, Vienna Staatsoper and the Teatro Massimo (Palermo). Furlanetto will also sing Méphistophélès in Gounod’s ‘Faust’, Don Basilio in ‘Il Barbiere di Siviglia’ and Silva in ‘Ernani’ at the Met.

Mezzo-soprano Anna Kiknadze is a principal soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg. Highlights of her early career include being a finalist at the 2001 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, 2002 Placido Domingo Operalia Competition in Paris and the International Rimsky-Korsakov Competition in St. Petersburg.

I’ve Tortured You Long Enough is the tongue-in-cheek title of Mass Gothic’s second album. Husband/wife duo Noel Heroux and Jessica Zambri have always dipped in and out of each other’s creative spaces, advising on their respective outputs and supporting one another. But, until this record, they had never completely committed to doing an entire album as a duo, sharing an equal load. The result is a record packed with the tension, chaos and beauty of a fluid and cathartic two-way conversation. In a universe that increasingly threatens our abilities to communicate and coexist, their creative union isn’t just inspired but important. When Heroux put out Mass Gothic’s 2016 debut, following the end of his prior band, Hooray for Earth, he did so as a solo entity. Plagued by insecurities and anxieties, Heroux wasn’t ready to deal with putting his trust and confidence into another shared project. So what changed? He can’t exactly pinpoint when the phrase “I’ve tortured you long enough” came to him, but it became a mantra, almost a premonition. He had tortured his own psyche long enough, and was particularly in need of forcing himself out of his comfort zone and letting go of that prior stubbornness. And the phrase has a broader application, too. “It covers so many bases but it’s taken on extra meaning in the past couple of years when everybody is at each other’s throats, frustrated and confused all the time,” Heroux explains. Heroux and Zambri wrote I’ve Tortured You Long Enough while bouncing around the country without a place to call home. From working in a rented cabin in upstate New York, to living out of a car with a duffel bag of clothes, to crashing with their co-producer Josh Ascalon in LA, to ditching a mixed version of the album and rerecording the whole thing, the band worked tirelessly while their lives were totally in flux. “Maybe we wouldn’t have been able to do it if we were anchored at home. We were forced into it. Jess was trying to open me up and if we could have just sat on a couch and thrown on the TV it probably wouldn’t have worked.” The album was ultimately recorded in Brooklyn with Rick Kwan, and Chris Coady mixed the record and Heba Kadry mastered it. The final product recalls the frantic energy of Animal Collective and the celestial torch-bearing of Bat for Lashes, and reveals a remarkable arc. It begins from a place of uncertainty, disquiet, and self-doubt, and concludes with the comfort in knowing that you can be both independent and successful in a relationship.

Playing Santuzza in a student production of Cavalleria rusticana in Athens in April 1939 was the very first time that Maria Callas, then aged 15, appeared in a leading role in a complete opera, albeit a short one. Her performance went well, both vocally and histrionically, despite the fact that she was suffering from toothache, and her shortsightedness on stage proved to be a problem that needed to be overcome, both then and throughout her career. She later sang Santuzza professionally with the Greek National Opera Company in 1944. After her sensational triumph in I puritani in Venice in 1949 she embarked on a glittering international career and became established as the leading star of La Scala, Milan, which became her artistic home throughout the 1950s. It was with the forces of La Scala that she would go on to make a series of opera recordings that remain unsurpassed to this day, beginning with I puritani in March 1953. Her next recording at La Scala was to be Tosca in August, but before then a recording of Cavalleria rusticana was being made in June at La Scala with a distinguished mezzo-soprano as Santuzza. Despite the fact that this singer was appearing in the role successfully in live performances around that time, she spectacularly failed to hit the top note at the recording sessions, even after repeated tries. The mezzo was given a period of rest and the sessions were postponed until early August, but just before they were about to resume she announced that she was ill and was dropped completely from the project. In a desperate attempt to save the situation, Callas was asked to step in and, despite pressing engagements elsewhere, she agreed. After two days’ rehearsal with Maestro Serafin, she ran through the performance in fine style and the recording now takes its rightful place in the Callas catalogue. –TONY LOCANTRO, 2014

“Francisco Tárrega. How did the Romantic music in” Spanish Guitar “change through the work of guitarists who were active at the same time as him, who is called the father of modern guitar playing, such as Ferrer, Bosch, Manhon, and Mrs. Platten? I will look at it. The Romantics of “Spanish Guitar” was a series of trials and errors. There was always a guitar-like character in their work, which was synonymous with “Spanish”. The writing style and aesthetics of the “Spanish guitar” music that they sought continue to maintain their life as “guitar-ness.” With the advent of Manuel de Falla’s “first full-scale guitar work by non-guitarists” (hymn “Dedicated to the Grave of Debussy”), classical guitar music has produced many modern and contemporary works since the 20th century. But even Falla hasn’t forgotten the aesthetic of the “Spanish guitar” that guitarist composers have been aiming for by this point. In order to understand the genre of classical guitar since modern times, it is essential to know the works of Tarrega and the guitarists who were active around that time. The process of their conflict and trial and error became the “guide” to modern and contemporary guitar music…
