The Melt Trio’s third album has an atmospheric yet exciting effect. Bernhard and Peter Meyer and Moritz Baumgärtner have refined their special style and show even greater will to design in details. Their combination of acoustic and electronic sounds is more subtle than ever, concrete influences from jazz and classical modern to post and prog rock can only be made out in a vague way, because the music simply sounds like a melt trio. It has always been one of the band’s trademarks to merge composed and improvised passages in such a way that they can hardly be distinguished. Conventional structures, such as the succession of leitmotif and soloistic abstractions, have long been dissolved at Melt. And if you are looking for fretboard witchcraft for your own sake, you are welcome to find something else.

In 2015, Melody Gardot proved with Currency of Man that she was able to step out of her comfort zone, because this album, which looked like her hair, clearly showed a soul’n’blues oriented facet. That’s not to say that her brilliant previous attempts didn’t fit her musical personality, but on this record she confirmed with a hint of less jazz how much she feels connected to Philadelphia, the city where she grew up and where the groove has a completely different spice… The Sunset in the Blue, released five years later, sounds like a return to her own roots. Those thanks to whom Melody Gardot has made a name for herself. She approaches jazz and bossa nova in a liberated way, as if it were a matter of course due to the unexpected situation of 2020. Just as she starts working on this fifth studio album, the pandemic brings everything to a halt and forces the American to rethink her project. In this way, it proposes to all participants scattered all over the world to continue working from a distance. Melody Gardot lives in Paris, the conductor responsible for the arrangements Vince Mendoza in Los Angeles and most of the musicians in England! Melkbelly, formed by vets of Chicago’s experimental and DIY scene champions, organized noise and thoughtful freneticism on its debut full-length, “Nothing Valley”, fusing dreamy vocal lines and cantankerous guitar racket. Its songs clang and bang in stripped-down production that highlights the band’s sharp edges; multi-faceted slabs of sound serve harmonious, immediate songs. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that the band members’ tastes run obscure–The Hecks, Lightning Bolt, and jazz drummer Paal Nilssen-Love and, as they tell us, “bands and musicians that draw on a sense of adventure”. The quartet’s membership overlaps with several Chicago noise and experimental bands and art collectives.
An efficient one-day recording session resulted in Melkbelly’s first EP, 2014’s “Pennsylvania,” which opened the door to touring and opening slots for Speedy Ortiz, Magik Markers and Built to Spill, and led to The Chicago Reader calling Melkbelly “one of the most exciting new sounds out of Chicago.” Next, Melkbelly got back to writing and working, recording a pair of 7-inches with Dave Vettraino at Chicago’s Public House where it had made its first recordings ever for Public House’s Digital Singles Series and a Public House compilation tape. The sessions gave the band a chance to deepen its collaboration with Vettraino.
Miranda writes most of Melkbelly’s tunes on guitar and brings them to the band who puts them through the ringer, where they morph into a Melkbelly arrangement. Often, however, the band will take a guitar riff or two from an open jam recorded at practice and spin it into a song. “Nothing Valley” was recorded in early 2016 in Vettraino’s basement studio to 8-track analog tape. Fresh off a West Coast tour, the band let the hours on the road and missed art tourism opportunities at Spiral Jetty shape the songs as well as the recording process itself, writing half the album material in the studio. “Nothing Valley” breezes gust fresh and forcefully.

April 2016, Canadian singer Mélissa Laveaux heads to Haiti, her parents’ homeland. 20 years have gone by since she last stepped foot there. Here she is today, still a stranger to a country that is very much an intricate part of her identity. She discovers an extraordinary heritage: the folk songs that have bred and nourished Haitians artists for decades.
Returning from Haiti with sounds, melodies, moods and stories of distant times, upon which Mélissa built the musical backbone to Radyo Siwèl. A re-interpretation, sometimes from scraps, sometimes from a few phrases in a book, from traditional tunes to vaudou anthems, sewn together like a patchwork of intersecting identities. Draping them in her indie rock aesthetic, percussive and sinuous guitars, Mélissa’s voice booms and unfurls to give the music its distinct sound. The overall result benefitting from the surreal halo that the jacks-of-all-trade A.L.B.E.R.T. studio achieved to make way for these dark or light meditations, enriched by the notable shining presence of Drew Gonsalves, leading man and songwriter of Trinidadian band Kobo Town, on guitar and quattro.
Mélissa then reimagines a past, that can only serve to open up a future of new possibilities. A fairytale still looking for its happy ending. Starting at the roots, she chose the branches and leaves of the stories she best knew how to tell – piecing together an odd tree. It yields the little hog plums which endemic to Haiti, “siwèl” in creole.

For her 15th album, the singer-songwriter explores pain—physical and emotional—and the ways Americans medicate. It’s a call for marijuana legalization, a rallying cry against opioids and a plea for unity. On expansive rocker “Faded By Design,” the cancer survivor eschews Western medicine for self-care: “Don’t call the doctor / The cure is in my mind.” The spare and lovely “Here Comes the Pain” empathizes the root cause of addiction, while “Woman Like You” explores feminism and changing norms against a swirling, McCartney-esque melody. Etheridge has said that she was going for a ’90s rock sound—”moody and fierce.” With its giant grunge guitars and swooning chorus, “Shaking,” a look at collective national anxiety, hits the bulls-eye. As does the fierce, arena-rock title track which proves that Etheridge can make “e-i-e-i-oh” sound tough as nails. Even drawing courage from the survivors of a mass shooting on period-perfect power ballad “Last Hello” she never condescends. There is nothing small or shy in Etheridge’s songs, and it’s refreshing.

Memphis Rock and Soul — meaning the kind of integrated, funky, swampy R&B-rock hybrid cranked out of Memphis’ American Sound Studio in the late ’60s, music that often saw release on the Stax imprint — is certainly well within the wheelhouse of Melissa Etheridge, who has emphasized the bluesy, soulful undercurrent in her voice since her eponymous 1988 debut. Arriving nearly 30 years after that album, Memphis Rock and Soul — released on a revived Stax by Concord Records — is faithful and loving to the original versions, preserving the arrangements but sometimes allowing the band to vamp a bit, as on Sam & Dave’s “Hold on, I’m Coming.” Usually, Etheridge stays with tried-and-true songs, finding space for both Otis Redding and Albert King, but she slides a couple of left-field choices into the mix, such as William Bell’s “Wait a Minute.” If Etheridge doesn’t necessarily rework these songs, these straightforward interpretations illustrate why the catalog endures and her affection for both the songs and sound of Southern soul in the ’60s is evident.
