Mystery to Me is the eighth studio album by British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac, originally released in October 1973. This was their last album to feature Bob Weston. Most of the songs were penned by guitarist/singer Bob Welch and keyboardist/singer Christine McVie, who were playing a major role in edging the band’s sound towards the radio-friendly pop-rock that would make them highly successful a few years later. Although the album only sold moderately and produced no hit singles, “Hypnotized” did become an FM radio staple for many years. In the wake of the Buckingham/Nicks led line-up’s success a few years later, it achieved Gold status in 1976.

On paper, the revenge of the return of the Groovies might look frightening. Or, at least, it might inspire some doubts. Unless you’re a gerontophile… But nevertheless, this grandiose group, which has been immensely underestimated, born in California in the mid-Sixties, and which would bring together the DNA of both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, still has something to say. Take it from us! Especially since Fantastic Plastic, which came out in the middle of Summer 2017 marks the reunion of Cyril Jordan, the founding guitarist, and Chris Wilson, the singer from 1971 to 1981, who had fallen out for thirty years… This reconciliation began in 2013, when the two sexagenarians patched things up on stage. Even better, they decided to put their heads together for a new record! And you have got to admit that what they came up with is hot stuff. Even if nothing here rivals the best of their great records of yore like Flamingo (1970),Teenage Head (1971) or Shake Some Action (1976), Jordan and Wilson have revived the yin and the yang of their music, both its pop and rock/rhythm’n’blues faces, with plenty, plenty of guitars à la Byrds, choruses with a vintage flavour and even two well-chosen covers, I Want You Bad by NRBQ and Don’t Talk To Strangers by the Beau Brummels. In short, this is five-star rock’n’roll for oldies, anything but embarrassing – and actually pretty charming.

When Steve Marriott left the Small Faces in 1969, the three remaining members brought in guitarist Ron Wood and lead singer Rod Stewart to complete the lineup and changed their name to the Faces, which was only appropriate since the group now only slightly resembled the mod-pop group of the past. Instead, the Faces were a rough, sloppy rock & roll band, able to pound out a rocker like “Had Me a Real Good Time,” a blues ballad like “Tell Everyone,” or a folk number like “Richmond” all in one album. Stewart, already becoming a star in his own right, let himself go wild with the Faces, tearing through covers and originals with abandon. While his voice didn’t have the power of Stewart, bassist Ronnie Lane’s songs were equally as impressive and eclectic. Wood’s rhythm guitar had a warm, fat tone that was as influential and driving as Keith Richards’ style.

Notorious for their hard-partying, boozy tours and ragged concerts, the Faces lived the rock & roll lifestyle to the extreme. When Stewart’s solo career became more successful than the Faces, the band slowly became subservient to his personality; after their final studio album, Ooh La La, in 1973, Lane left the band. After a tour in 1974, the band called it quits. Wood joined the Rolling Stones, drummer Kenny Jones eventually became part of the Who, and keyboardist Ian McLagan became a sought-after supporting musician; Stewart became a superstar, although he never matched the simple charm of the Faces.
