In Between Dub, featuring a remix collection of some of Jack Johnson’s most beloved recordings from his over two decade long career, but with a dub twist. A three-year creation, the album began after Jack reached out to famed reggae pioneer Lee “Scratch” Perry in early 2020 to produce a dub remix album. After a year-long pandemic pause, Lee “Scratch” Perry began working on several tracks, crafting original music and mixes from his studio in Jamaica. Lee “Scratch” Perry sent the sketches over to Jack in Hawaii and together they connected to collaborate on a direction.

Dr. J.A. Kawarsky (b. 1959) is Professor of Music Theory and Composition at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton in New Jersey. Kawarsky received his B.M. in composition from Iowa State University and his M.M. and D.M.A. from Northwestern University, where he studied with John Paynter, Alan Stout, and Frederick Ockwell. In 1982, Kawarsky conducted the Opera Company of the Negev Region in Be’er Sheva in Israel. Before coming to Westminster in 1989, he taught at Fort Hays State University, the University of Wisconsin, and Moraine Valley Community College.

The starting point for our attention here is the work of the Spanish composer, guitarist and guitar teacher Francisco Tarrega ( 1852-1909), whose “school” influenced numerous Spanish composers who, like Tarrega himself, saw the guitar as Spain’s national instrument. The 19th century was a time when large concert halls were being constructed, something which, as the guitar began to enjoy increasing popularity, became rather problematic for guitarists, particularly as far as the acoustics were concerned. It was the Spanish guitar maker Antonio Torres ( 1817-1892) who, basing his designs on those of previous guitar makers, combined with the most up-to-date research into acoustics, developed larger instruments, something which Tarrega found vitally interesting, so much so that he developed a new playing technique. Through the evolution of his style of legato fretting and his own particular perception of the diverse timbral possibilities of the guitar, Tarrega created sounds that virtually made the in-strument sing.

The program of the birthday season starts with a tribute to a key figure of European jazz who died early: the Polish pianist and composer Krzysztof Komeda. Since Joachim Kühn met Komeda at the famous Jazz Jamboree in Warsaw in 1965 and then accompanied him to the recording studio, he has been one of his admirers. Back in the ’70s, a group of rock & roll carousers called themselves the Hollywood Vampires as they crawled the bars of Los Angeles during the dead of night. Alice Cooper was at the forefront, joined by Harry Nilsson, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, and Micky Dolenz – a crew so soused that their tales became legend, even if the specifics of the debauchery were often forgotten. Forty years later, Alice Cooper revived the name Hollywood Vampires when he formed a classic rock supergroup with Joe Perry and Johnny Depp. In the spirit of the original Hollywood Vampires, a bunch of other stars were invited to play on the group’s eponymous 2015 album; it boasted cameos from Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, Slash, Joe Walsh, Perry Farrell, AC/DC’s Brian Johnson, the Doors’ Robby Krieger, and Winger’s Kip Winger. Hollywood Vampires peaked in the Top 50 on the Billboard 200 and was supported by a tour. When it came time to play live gigs in support of the record, Cooper, Perry, and Depp brought in the Guns N’ Roses rhythm section of bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum, adding Cooper’s guitarist Tommy Henriksen as a third guitarist. In 2019, Cooper, Depp, and Perry resurrected the project for album number two. The resulting Rise features cameos by Jeff Beck and John Waters – the pair appear on “Welcome to Bushwackers” – and relies heavily on original material. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The latest from Pulitzer Prize-winner Henry Threadgill, The Other One, is comprised of a three-movement composition entitled “Of Valence” that was the musical component of a large multimedia work performed and recorded live at Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn, New York in May, 2022. Written for a 12-piece ensemble – made up of an unusual instrumental combination of three saxophones, violin, viola, two cellos, tuba, percussion, piano and two bassoons – The New York Times described the performance as possessing “a galvanic sense of swing,” and “in lock-step with his every surprise rhythmic feint — producing an obliquely danceable, straightforwardly joyous Threadgillian energy.”

Helmut Zacharias (January 27, 1920-February 28, 2002) was a German violinist. He started having lessons at the age of 4. Being 6 he played at the cabaret Faun in Berlin and had his first radio broadcast five years later. In the 1950s he was considered to be one of the best jazz violinists of Europe. He played together with many other famous artists, including Yehudi Menuhin and had his own TV show from 1968 to 1973. He died in 2002 in Tessin, Switzerland.
