Crossfade from Sweden is ready to release album #4. Following the success of the first three albums – “White On Blue”, “Secret Love” and “Carousel” – now comes “Innocent Days”. The core of the band remains with Göran Edman on vocals, Lars Hallback on guitars and Richard Stenstrom on keyboards. The new blood is brought in by Felix Lehrmann on drums (Jon Anderson/Roine Stolt, Flower Kings) and Johan Granstrom on bass. Percussion is handled by Andreas Ekstedt and background vocals by Göran Edman and Annelie Axon. The music is still very much Crossfade, a yacht rock like sound brought into the 21st century. A musical brew that has the easily recognizable sound of Crossfade with spicy ingredients of Toto, Steely Dan & The Doobie Brothers and with vocal arrangements reminiscent of the Eagles and Queen.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © RCA – Legacy

Classic soul from Aretha Franklin’s hip sister – and quite possibly the most unified of all the Carolyn Franklin albums for RCA! This set’s got some great arrangements from Wade Marcus – who blends together strings and soul in that solid way that Arif Mardin was using with Aretha at the start of the 70s – a move away from more southern-styled soul, into a rich, mature sound that showed a whole new side of Carolyn’s talents. There’s some great keyboards in the mix, slinking nicely alongside the vocals – which themselves still show the Franklin family roots, packed with power and plenty of depth. Titles include “As Long As You Are There”, “My Heart Sings”, “Dad”, “I Want To Be With You”, “Boy I Love You”, “As Long As You Are There”, and “Darling I’d Rather”.

Chamber Works for Viola from composer David Jaeger gathers together some of Jaeger’s most defiantly creative compositions and demonstrates the vast possibilities of the viola and the chamber music genre as a whole. The album includes pieces like Diptych for viola and piano, lamenting at one moment and brazen the next. Six Miniatures on poems by David Cameron, for solo viola brings to life the poetic works of David Cameron, winner of the 2014 Hennessy Literary Award for Poetry. The album features the tasteful virtuosity of violist Carol Gimbel and pianist Cullan Bryant. Jaeger’s music will surely remind listeners—and perhaps even some other composers—of the rich tonal palate the viola offers.

The Chopin Project is Franco-Belgian cellist Camille Thomas’ most ambitious project to date, comprising a trio of albums that pay tribute to Chopin’s favorite instrument.

The first chapter, “Cello Arrangements”, presents a unique and enchanting collection of Chopin’s most famous works, arranged for cello by great musicians of all times, from Franchomme, Glazounov, Misha Maisky to Thomas himself.

The second chapter, “Complete Chamber Music”, offers the complete collection of Chopin’s works for chamber ensemble, featuring Thomas and a group of world-class musicians such as Daniel Hope, Julien Brocal, Julien Libeer and Lucas Debargue.

Finally, in “The Franchomme Legacy”, the third chapter of the trilogy, Thomas explores the relationship between Chopin and his close friend and fellow cellist Auguste Franchomme. In this collection she shows the influence Franchomme had on Chopin’s music and the deep connection between these two great musicians.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 01:17:52 minutes | 2,61 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Supraphon a.s.

The internationally renowned Czech-born composer Karel Husa, Pulitzer Prize and Grawemeyer Award winner, gathered invaluable experience from Arthur Honegger and Nadia Boulanger, with whom he studied in Paris in the 1940s and 1950s. He was also greatly influenced by the folk music of his native Bohemia, as well as Slovakia, which is duly reflected in his Évocations de Slovaquie and Four Bohemian Sketches. Husa’s later pieces for clarinet and a variety of other instruments attest to his propensity for innovation and experimentation, yet all of them are comprehensible and listener-friendly. The present album opens with the gracious and, now and then, melancholy Sonatina by Bohuslav Martinů, who, just like Husa, studied in Paris and experienced exile sorrow. The young Czech clarinettist Anna Paulová, a Prague Spring laureate and the holder of numerous accolades from other international competitions, has enthusiastically devoted to Karel Husa over the long term. Recorded with superb instrumentalists, her Supraphon debut is likely to increase general interest in the remarkable composer’s music.

A variety of clarinet colours and shades in Karel Husa and Bohuslav Martinů works.

In Mirage—his fourth album with Prima Classic—Anders Miolin shows us what are arguably his most contemplative and intimate pieces to date. Purposely written in different locations, these works are powerful evocations of memories, times, places and emotions collected by this most unique and erudite composer.

The pieces display an extraordinary palette of musical colors obtained through different tunings of the Dodeka guitar and Anders’ creative use of his own musical idiom.

An album that will surprise for its uncommon sound, at times contemplative, at times suggestive, or vivid, but always original.

“The landscape can lead one into paths that one did not expect.

One should not struggle against the will of the music itself but try to gratefully follow the intelligence and direction of the subconscious. In stillness, we can avoid the noise and distractions of modern life that disrupts our connection to this wise source… These works reflect my inner universe, emerging from stillness.”

Natalie Bergman – Mercy (2021)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 37:06 minutes | 377 MB | Genre: Pop
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Third Man Records LLC

From this first solo album that she wrote, performed, recorded and produced almost alone, Natalie Bergman imposed her world on the world! Because Mercy is a universe in its own right. Twelve singular and spiritual songs haunted by death and resurrection, carried as much by her elastic voice as by a vintage musical halo of a bygone era … Natalie Bergman had so far spent a decade singing a duet with her brother Elliot at the breast. by Wild Belle, an LA-based duo focused on pop, reggae, ska and psychedelia. This life fell apart the day his father and mother-in-law were killed by a drunk driver. Raised in a strong faith, Natalie decides to retire to a monastery in the Chama Valley in New Mexico. This is where Mercy was born, an obviously cathartic record, nestled in the essence of gospel which she says is the true source of rock’n’roll. A unique and timeless work that has its own unique way of praising the sacred and healing nature of music. “My faith and my music are essential to my existence. I sing the “home” a lot on this album. My paradise, my sky. Believing in this place has been my greatest comfort. I had a need to know that my father was there. His sudden death was a swirling chaos that assailed my mind. Gospel gives me hope. This is the good news. This is exemplary. It can bring you the truth. It can keep you alive. This album gave me the only hope of coming back to life on my own. “

Natalie Bergman’s Mercy speaks to a particular stage of the grieving process wherein one’s existence has become so suffused with suffering that the only option for relief is turning to a higher power in a desperate plea to remove it. Bergman, also known as part of brother-sister duo Wild Belle, uses the musical framework of spiritual gospel as filtered through sun-dappled psychedelia (also a somewhat spiritual genre, for all its aesthetic goofiness) to work through the pain of losing her father and stepmother in a drunk driving accident; she learned about their deaths just as she was about to take the stage with Wild Belle—an unspeakably sad story she fearlessly recounts in the record’s tender closing track “Last Farewell.” Though the record is filled with hopeful entreaties to the power of Jesus to lift up lost souls, wrapped up twinkly 60s-tinged sounds, Mercy (which Bergman wrote, performed and mixed herself) is often at its most potent when she strips the music down to its barest essentials and her lyrics down to questions that are heartbreaking in their simplicity. On “Home at Last,” she idly strums her guitar and wonders: “What is my sin, Lord? / Where is my joy?” Though some may be put off by the record’s barefaced religiosity, for Bergman, there is no distinction between the healing ability of God and that of music. On Mercy, she puts her faith in both.

The Sonáta ‘pro klavír’ „I. X. 1905, Z ulice“, JW 8/19 (Piano Sonata “1 October 1905, From the Street” in E minor, JW 8/19, 1905) was inspired by the tragic and violent death of a protester during a demonstration calling for the construction of a new Czech university. Janacek drew inspiration from this deeply traumatising event, resulting in his only piano sonata. Although not entirely pianistic, it contains strong elements of drama and originality.

“I always went my own road and on my own legs where I had a mind to go.” This quote from the 1899 short novel “Heart of Darkness” by Polish writer Joseph Conrad could also be Natalia Mateo’s philosophy of life. The 31 year-old vocalist is a wanderer between the worlds – musically and in real life. Born in Poland, raised in Austria and now living in Germany, she has absorbed the most varied of impressions and cultures into her being. She draws from the Slavic ballad tradition, from American jazz and singer-songwriters ranging from Joni Mitchell to Amy Macdonald, and from contemporary pop and rock music. Mateo’s music is a highly personal declaration of love to tradition and modernity, to familiarity on the one hand and on the other to the wanderlust throbbing in her heart and head, to the beauty of emotional attachment, of deepest interpersonal relationships and the independence we live while in them.
