Diamond Star Halos is the brand new album from Def Leppard, their first since their chart topping self-titled Def Leppard record in 2015. Written by the band over the past two years it features 15 tracks including the anthemic, stadium-ready singles “Kick” and “Fire It Up”, with guest vocals from Alison Krauss on “This Guitar” and “Lifeless”. The album title references T. Rex’s “Bang a Gong (Get It On)” with nods to T.Rex, David Bowie and Mott The Hoople across the album, which mixes the sound of their classic spirit with modern fire. The 1CD features a black & white cover with colour logo, packaged in a jewel case.

A glamorously gaudy, self-made, post-modern diva stitched together from elements of Madonna, David Bowie, and Freddie Mercury, Lady Gaga was the first millennial superstar. Mastering the constant connection of the Internet era, Gaga generated countless mini-sensations with her style, her videos, and her music, cultivating a devoted audience she dubbed “Little Monsters.” But it wasn’t just a cult that turned her 2008 manifesto The Fame into a self-fulfilling prophecy: Gaga crossed over into the mainstream, ushering out one pop epoch and kick-starting a new one, quickly making such turn-of-the-century stars as Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears seem old-fashioned. A few worthwhile tracks on this ultimately disappointing early mainstream rock effort. “Anthem”, “Queen”, “Florida” & “New Day” are all pretty decent as 70’s AOR style mainstream rock goes. “Anthem” has some very “David Bowie” style vocals, and “Queen” has a great eclectic style to it which may have been a classic rock radio staple had this Lp had a few more better tracks on it to pull it out of obscurity.

It doesn’t play very well as a Lp, even with most of the better tunes on side one (..re-sequencing makes all the difference)….but for 70’s AOR/mainstream rock fans, there’s maybe a few tracks worth checking out here.

Recorded in December 1983, In Session captures an in-concert jam between Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, the latter of whom had become the hot blues guitarist of the year thanks to his debut Texas Flood, as well as his work on David Bowie’s hit Let’s Dance. Vaughan may have been the new news, but King was not suffering, either. He had a world-class supporting band and was playing as well as he ever had. In other words, the stage was set for a fiery, exciting concert and that’s exactly what they delivered. Vaughan was clearly influenced by King — there are King licks all over his first two recorded efforts, and it was an influence that stayed with him to the end — and he was unafraid to go toe-to-toe with his idol. King must have been impressed, since In Session never devolves into a mere cutting contest. Instead, each musicians spurs the other to greater heights. For aficionados of either guitarist, that means the album isn’t just worth a listen — it means that it’s a record that sounds as exciting on each subsequent listen as does the first time through.
