Leon Vynehall returns with new album Rare Forever, the follow up to 2018’s critically acclaimed debut Nothing Is Still. Rare, Forever will feel familiar for fans of Vynehall’s DJ-Kicks mix or his eclectic excursions on NTS, while simultaneously sounding unlike anything he’s ever done before. As much as there are dancefloor memories and moments, it’s not strictly a dance record — instead, Rare, Forever is the clearest representation of the broad spectrum of music he’s made to date, deftly weaving newer shades of post-punk, ambient, techno and drone.

Foreverly is an unforgettable collection inspired by Songs Our Daddy Taught Us, an album of traditional Americana songs reinterpreted, recorded and released by The Everly Brothers in 1958. The album captures the beauty of the Everly’s stunning close harmonies to create a moving and powerful testament to these traditional ballads. The collaboration between Green Day front man and Grammy Award winning artist Billie Joe Armstrong and Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter Norah Jones began ten years ago when they both performed with Stevie Wonder and his band at the Grammys.

Steve Gadd – Spirit of Chick Corea (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 44:55 minutes | 780 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Eight Islands Records
We are all blindsided and deeply saddened by the passing of Chick Corea. One of his longtime collaborators, from his early fusion years up until the very end, is drummer Steve Gadd.
Back in 2019 at the Montreal Jazz Festival, I briefly interviewed Gadd about the time he briefly played in Return to Forever. We listen to that bootleg, along with his reflection on Corea not as a pianist, but as a drummer. He says hearing Chick play the drums in the late 1960s unlocked his own playing on one particular night. “His approach and what he did was so free. Here’s a piano player playing the drums in a way that I never thought of. My playing changed that night. Overnight. It sort of cleared some things up for me.”

Less is usually more, but not always. On their new album “III”, the quartet Evelyn Kryger brilliantly demonstrates that you can put everything you’ve got into a project and end up with even more than you thought. Without having planned it this way, saxophonist Christoph “Cito” Kaling, keyboarder Arne Dreske, bassist Jonas Holland-Moritz and drummer Hannes Dunker have succeeded in creating a monumental oeuvre with “III”, which bears the traits of a concept album.

Makoto Ozone is popular Japanese pianist. His 10th album, sounds like Chick Corea’s records of early 70s – “Return to Forever” being a good example. The tone of his mellow electric piano has resulted in a new landscape in jazz. All songs are original compositions.

Legendary drummer Kenny Clarke compared Jean-Luc Ponty to Dizzy Gillespie. Fellow violinist Stuff Smith marveled, “He plays violin like Coltrane plays saxophone.” Born in 1942, the French violinist Jean-Luc Ponty transported jazz violin playing into the world of modern jazz. On Frank Zappa’s urging, Ponty moved to the States in 1970. Over the next years he toured with Zappa, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Chick Corea’s “Return to Forever”.

The Stanley Clarke Band – The Message (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 44:47 minutes | 490 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Mack Avenue Records
45 years after his first album, Stanley Clarke shows that he is still an untouchable virtuoso on the bass, electric and acoustic guitar, with an artistic vision that is completely his own. Supported by friends as varied as rapper Doug E. Fresh and trumpet player Mark Isham and accompanied by a band featuring Cameron Graves and Beka Gochiashvili on keyboards and Mike Mitchell on drums, the bass ace unfurls all his know-how on this record, whether he’s throwing himself into a torrid funky swerve or revisiting a Bach suite! There’s an impressive eclecticism throughout, though this former member of Return to Forever never ceases to be himself. What’s more, Stanley Clarke doesn’t forget to pay tribute to some recently deceased colleagues: George Duke, Prince, Leon “Ndugu” Chancler, Darryl Brown, Tom Petty, Chuck Berry, Larry Coryell and Al Jarreau. – Clotilde Maréchal

The Jerry Hahn Brotherhood was formed by jazz guitarist Jerry Hahn who had paid his dues working with John Handy, the Fifth Dimension and Gary Burton. By 1970, he wanted to get a band together that would reflect a myriad of musical influences–- jazz, blues, rock, gospel, country etc. One of the best parts of the early 1970’s was the great amount of experimentation that was going on among bands in general. A very fertile period indeed. As a matter of fact, one could easily make the claim that this here record was one of the very first true fusion albums to hit the scene. Later came such bands as Return To Forever and Weather Report who received wide acclaim for bringing together elements of jazz and rock but let’s face it…However, The Jerry Hahn Brotherhood had been there first.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 36:42 minutes | 1,41 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Craft Recordings
This is the album that launched Flora Purim’s solo career with great promise following her magnificent stint with Chick Corea’s first incarnation of Return to Forever. Most of the tracks on this album sound like they would have fit very nicely onto one of RTF’s first two LPs, with bandmate Stanley Clarke not only lending support on electric and acoustic bass, but also contributing original compositions and arrangements to the mix. The rest of the supporting cast is not too shabby either, including sax and flute man Joe Henderson, keyboard whiz kid George Duke, guitarist David Amaro, and Purim’s other half, percussion legend Airto Moreira. Clarke’s funky “Dr. Jive” and lyrical “Butterfly Dreams” are standout tracks here, as is the upbeat Egberto Gismonti composition “Moon Dreams.” Duke shows his light Brazilian side on “Love Reborn,” featuring Henderson’s tenor sax solo and Amaro’s lovely acoustic guitar. Purim delivers a gorgeous take on Jobim’s well-known ballad “Dindi,” and reshapes the standard “Summer Night” into a wordless vocal in her unmistakable style. The disc closes with a fine reworking of Clarke’s now-classic “Light as a Feather,” which strays not too far from the original RTF version. Neatly capturing Flora Purim’s many vocal strengths, Butterfly Dreams delivered on the great expectations generated by her work with Corea and turned out to be a high point in her recording career. – Jim Newsom
