Oscar Peterson was one of the greatest piano players of all time. A pianist with phenomenal technique on the level of his idol, Art Tatum, Peterson’s speed, dexterity, and ability to swing at any tempo were amazing. Very effective in small groups, jam sessions, and in accompanying singers, O.P. was at his absolute best when performing unaccompanied solos. His original style did not fall into any specific idiom. Like Erroll Garner and George Shearing, Peterson’s distinctive playing formed during the mid- to late ’40s and fell somewhere between swing and bop. Peterson was criticized through the years because he used so many notes, didn’t evolve much since the 1950s, and recorded a remarkable number of albums. Perhaps it is because critics ran out of favorable adjectives to use early in his career; certainly it can be said that Peterson played 100 notes when other pianists might have used ten, but all 100 usually fit, and there is nothing wrong with showing off technique when it serves the music. As with Johnny Hodges and Thelonious Monk, to name two, Peterson spent his career growing within his style rather than making any major changes once his approach was set, certainly an acceptable way to handle one’s career. Because he was Norman Granz’s favorite pianist (along with Tatum) and the producer tended to record some of his artists excessively, Peterson made an incredible number of albums. Not all are essential, and a few are routine, but the great majority are quite excellent, and there are dozens of classics.

Oscar Peterson’s series of recordings for Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer during the 1960s and early ’70s are one of many high points in his long career. With George “Jiri” Mraz on bass and Ray Price on drums, Peterson’s flashy romp through “I Love You” (complete with a humorous detour into the opera “Pagliacci”) and mid-tempo walk through “All of You” salute Cole Porter in style on Walking the Line. “Rock of Ages” isn’t the old hymn but a lively, gospel-inflected Peterson original that will easily get any congregation swinging and swaying to the music. His mastery of the ballad form is heard in his sensitive interpretation of “Once Upon a Summertime,” which showcases Mraz’s gorgeous tone, as Price sits out this one.

When the world-renowned Canadian pianist came to Villingen in 1961, there was a mood of intense excitement all round. Hans-Georg Brunner-Schwer (HGBS), former owner of the hifi dynasty SABA who died in 2004, had just set up the first version of his studio, equipped with the most advanced recording technology of the time, above the living-room in his villa. This was the bait used by the piano enthusiast to attract the famous pianist to the Black Forest. After a guest performance in Zurich, Peterson climbed into a limousine and embarked on a journey across the mountains. As soon as he arrived, along with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen, the international star was led to the Steinway grand in the living-room where a number of excited guests were eagerly waiting. “I listened to him play ’til four o’clock in the morning and lost the desire to ever hear the Beatles again!”, says Matthias Brunner-Schwer, HGBS’ son, still starry-eyed half a century later. The legendary pianist himself was equally delighted when he listened to the recording of the nocturnal living-room performance, never before having heard such a direct and pristine piano sound on tape. It sounded to him as if he was still there at the grand piano, undisturbed by distracting nightclub sounds yet surrounded by a wonderfully intimate atmosphere. Peterson’s enthusiastic response marked the beginning of a long-term friendship and spiritual kinship with Brunner-Schwer.

One of the first Broadway musical scores to be overtly jazz-influenced was Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story”, a tale of rival street gangs in the inner city. In 1962, pianist Oscar Peterson put his light-swing signature on the already popular score, making it, in the words of one critic, ‘a delight to hear again’ and earning him a Grammy nomination.

Although there are numerous recordings featuring the Oscar Peterson Trio (with bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis), the discovery of another previously unreleased date such as this one is welcome news to his fans. This concert, recorded in the summer of 1958 at the Orpheum Theater in Vancouver, Canada, finds the group in top form, beginning with the simmering treatment of “Alone Together.”

In addition to other familiar favorites (such as a gallop through “The Surrey With the Fringe on Top” and a pristine take of “My Funny Valentine”), the trio delves into rarely heard original material, including Peterson’s lovely “Music Box Suite” (also known as “Daisy’s Dream”) and a pair of works by Ellis, the wide-ranging solo feature called “Patricia” and “Pogo,” a turbocharged bop line focusing on Ellis and Brown, with a deliberately delayed entrance by the leader.

In the 1950s and early ’60s, producer Norman Granz perfected the songbook approach to album production by having vocalist Ella Fitzgerald interpret large segments of the standard jazz repertoire. In a frankly stated effort to expand the listening audience for this great body of work, Granz also asked Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson to churn out numerous instrumental songbooks albums under his own name with various combos. By the end of the decade, these included Oscar’s newly reconfigured trio with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen. Like its companion albums, Peterson’s Richard Rodgers Song Book was never intended as a set of exercises in soul-searching profundity. Instead what you get are simple, straightforward, well-played appreciations of great American songwriting. Most of the melodies on this album resulted from Rodgers’ extraordinary collaborative relationship with lyricist Lorenz Hart, and a couple of Oscar Hammerstein numbers were thrown in as well. Those who enjoy this pleasant offering may wish to investigate Peterson’s songbook salutes to Duke Ellington, Vincent Youmans, Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, and numerous others.

Cole Porter’s tunes are great enough on their own, but Oscar really opens them up on this set – picking up the inherent rhythms in the numbers and really working them over – in a way that makes the outing one of the most lively in Peterson’s songbook series for Verve! Oscar’s fluid touch on the keys is perfect throughout – taking lots of chances, but always strongly following the melody – and rhythm accompaniment is from the usual team of Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums.

With Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums, Oscar Peterson reworks Cole Porter and says something original and distinctive. Highlights include “Love for Sale,” “Night and Day,” and “I Love Paris.” –AllMusic Review by Ron Wynn
