Manhattan Stories is a trip back in time, a journey to a long gone and long-missed era. It’s a window into the great Charles Lloyd’s art at a period of transition. The shows presented on this beautifully packaged two-disc set—one recorded at the infamous Slugs’ Saloon in the summer of 1965, the other recorded at Judson Hall in September of the same year—took place shortly after Lloyd left the employ of Julian “Cannonball” Adderley and before he became a cross-over sensation and hero to hippies, moving a million units of Forest Flower: Charles Lloyd At Monterey (Atlantic, 1966).

Charles Lloyd – Arrows Into Infinity (2014) Blu-ray MPEG-2 DD 2.0

Arrows Into Infinity chronicles the arc of an improvisers still-unfolding life, moving through time with memories, archive footage and music, lots of music. Charles Lloyds story is a special one, and it intersects with important moments in jazz history.
Lloyd grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and had early contact both to masters of an increasingly sophisticated jazz tradition and the raw voices of the blues. Booker Little was a childhood friend, Phineas Newborn a mentor. In his teens Lloyd hit the road with Howlin Wolf. He befriended Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry and Billy Higgins in a period when blueprints for musical freedom were redrawn, and replaced Eric Dolphy in Chico Hamiltons band, soon building a reputation as an exceptional saxophonist and a composer of strikingly original melodies.
His own groups drew together some of the most exciting players of the day, and his late 60s quartet with Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette made an impact at many levels, playing opposite Hendrix and Janis Joplin at the Fillmore Auditorium, touring Europes festivals to great acclaim, making a now-legendary foray into the Soviet Union, and selling a million copies of their Forest Flower album, a massive FM radio hit.
Then Charles Lloyd retreated from the limelight, preferring to play his flute in the mountain forests of Big Sur. For almost two decades sightings of him in jazz contexts were rare. A tentative return to public service was made in the company of pianist Michel Petrucciani; the 1989 ECM recording Fish Out Of Water, with Bobo Stenson, Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen signaled a new beginning. Since then Lloyd has led a succession of outstanding bands including the recent quartet with Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland and the Sangam trio with Harland and Zakir Hussain. These musicians contribute their thoughts about Charles Lloyds work to this remarkable documentary as do Herbie Hancock, Ornette Coleman, Robbie Robertson, Jack DeJohnette, Don Was, John Densmore, Jim Keltner, Geri Allen, Larry Grenadier, Alicia Hall Moran, Stanley Crouch, Manfred Eicher, Michael Cuscuna, Arthur Monroe and Ayuko Babu.
Arrows Into Infinity is available in DVD and Blu-ray formats. Running time 113 minutes. Subtitles in German, French, Spanish, Italian.

Dwight Trible is a rarity. Few singing careers involve performing with the legendary likes of Pharaoh Sanders, Kenny Garrett and Charles Lloyd, whilst also producing and innovating music with today’s hippest artists, ranging from J Dilla to Kamasi Washington.
His upcoming album, ‘Mothership’, is thus a true masterpiece. Trible’s voice, unrivalled in its passion and depth, is set against a background of spiritual riffs brought about by LA’s top jazz musicians, with Kamasi on saxophone no less. As arguably the world’s greatest living jazz vocalist, Dwight Trible is a legend in waiting – and it’s time he was heard.

Michel was one of the most popular pianists in the 1990’s due to his extraordinary technique, his astounding musical outlook and extremely dynamic playing style. His music is simply timeless and magical, seemingly coming straight from his soul. As he is often quoted: “I’m not playing to your head, but to your soul. When I play, I’m like a bird flying over the landscape, and I can land anywhere.”

This is a superb retrospective, despite his very considerable physical disabilities, of one of the very greatest piano jazz masters in the late twentieth century. There are ten studio and eight live recordings captured during a period of high productivity between 1994 and 1997. All the tunes are composed by the pianist who we hear in solo, duo, trio and sextet modes. The French musician was born on 28th December 1962 at Orange, in the south of the country. He suffered from Osteogenesis Imperfecta, an inherited disease, from birth which causes brittle bones and sometimes, as in his case, a shortness of stature. Despite all, after being influenced by Duke Ellington in his early years he began his public musical career aged only thirteen. He worked out of Paris as a young adult before moving briefly to California in the early eighties, where he made three significant recordings with saxophonist Charles Lloyd, subsequently spending his latter days in New York. During his career he delivered thirty two albums as a leader and many others as a sideman. Despite his incapacity he was very much a ladies man with five significant relationships during his lifetime, producing one son who sadly inherited his condition. He died on 6th January 1999 in New York City aged 36 and was buried at the Le Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, one grave away from Fredric Chopin.

For these Helsinki Songs, Trygve Seim has taken on pianist Kristian Randalu, double-bassist Mats Eilertsen and drummer Markku Ounaskari. Together, they have cooked up the Norwegian saxophonist’s eighth album for ECM, one which puts the accent on lyricism. From the off, the fluidity of Sol’s Song sets the tone for this warm, contemplative, sincere and melodic record that never falls into complacency. Helsinki Songs provide an ever-increasing feeling of wellbeing. Following in the footsteps of Charles Lloyd, Seim’s playing tends towards a musical poetry of rare beauty. This is more proof, were it needed, of the talent of this 47-year old musician, who is still sadly under-appreciated…  – Clotilde Maréchal

Released in 1978, this Beach Boys album is named for the Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa where it was recorded, a move that caused great turmoil within the band. Neither Dennis nor Carl Wilson approved of the decision, prompted by Mike Love’s adherence to Transcendental Meditation. As a result, only Love, Al Jardine and Brian Wilson were involved in any major way. The single Come Go With Me, re-released off a compilation in 1981, broke into the top 20 the second time around.

Four years after the landmark album Wisława, the great Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko’s New York Quartet returns with another masterful recording, December Avenue.

Always an insightful bandleader, Stanko here encourages spirited improvisation to flower around his characteristically melancholic and soulful themes, and all players are presented to best advantage. New band member Reuben Rogers – originally from the Virgin Islands and perhaps best-known for his work with Charles Lloyd – is a splendid addition to the team, establishing a profound understanding with Cuban-born pianist David Virelles and Detroit drummer Gerald Cleaver.
