Bjork has recorded many albums, under many different agendas, but there hasn’t been one as openly honest, vulnerable, yet powerful as this. As a follow up to Vespertine; that narrated the magical nature of falling in love, this is a diary entry of coming out the other side, her break-up with her partner Matthew Barney. Co-produced by Arca and The Haxan Cloak, the cinematic string arrangements, and the hiccuping percussion, alongside her lyrical confrontations and confessions, bring together a collaboration that is both symbiotic and dynamic. Written during the nine month period before her relationship ended, the first three tracks illustrate the confusion and denial on the impending break-up, while the following tracks move through the phases, ‘Black Lake’ drowns you with questions and pounding driving percussion, while ‘Family’ has The Haxan Cloak’s sound of the universe ripping apart. The last three tracks shed the dead skin, and the track ‘Atom Dance’ emerges featuring Antony Hegarty, with her ‘dancing towards transformation’. The last track on the album ‘Quicksand’ is a collaboration between Bleep’s own Spaces, where they have re-arranged his track ‘Apologies’ (that was released on his Spaces One EP), into a track of stuttering salvation. This is an incredibly sincere work, where she channels all of her strengths and struggles into an album that demands the listener to be as receptive as her in listening to it.

“Utopia” is the ninth studio album by Icelandic musician Björk. She began working on Utopia almost immediately after releasing Vulnicura in 2015. In March 2018, Björk released an EP featuring remixes of ‘Arisen My Senses’ by Jlin, Kelly Lee Owens and Lanark Artefax. The title song ‘Arisen My Senses’ opens Björk’s latest album, Utopia, and was co-produced by Arca. A 12″ edition of the EP will be released May 25 on One Little Indian and is pressed on “slug genitalia” colored vinyl.

‘Distant Light’ is Renée Fleming’s first foray into the hypnotic world of Scandinavian music. For her first new studio album in three years she has chosen to inspire and provoke with a daring mix of music.
The title comes from a poem in a new song cycle dedicated to Renée and here receiving its world premiere recording: Anders Hillborg’s ‘The Strand Settings’.
“At once atmospheric, elegiac and unsettling, the work was crafted with Ms. Fleming’s creamy voice in mind”, wrote the New York Times at its first performance in 2013. One of Sweden’s brightest star composers Hillborg has a close relationship with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic where this recording was made in February 2016 with its principal conductor Sakari Oramo.
Renée couples this with three songs by Björk in specially commissioned orchestrations by the brilliant Swedish composer and arranger Hans Ek, recorded here for the first time.
Why Björk? Both she and Renée are recipients of Sweden’s Polar Music Prize. Both dare to be original. In the fascinating booklet interview Renée talks about her admiration for Björk: “Her originality is breathtaking. She just blazes her own path forward”. Renée chooses the songs which mean the most to her personally and musically.

Medúlla is the fifth studio album by Icelandic recording artist Björk. It was released on 30 August 2004 in the United Kingdom by One Little Indian Records and in the United States by Elektra Records. After her electronic–influenced previous album Vespertine (2001), Björk intended to make an album almost entirely a cappella constructed with human vocals. For the project, she collaborated with vocal artists such as Mike Patton of rock band Faith No More, beatboxers Rahzel and Dokaka, as well as Inuit throat singer Tanya Gillis. Freed from the Sugarcubes’ confines, Björk takes her voice and creativity to new heights on Debut, her first work after the group’s breakup. With producer Nellee Hooper’s help, she moves in an elegantly playful, dance-inspired direction, crafting highly individual, emotional electronic pop songs like the shivery, idealistic “One Day” and the bittersweet “Violently Happy.” Despite the album’s swift stylistic shifts, each of Debut’s tracks are distinctively Björk. “Human Behaviour”‘s dramatic percussion provides a perfect showcase for her wide-ranging voice; “Aeroplane” casts her as a yearning lover against a lush, exotica-inspired backdrop; and the spare, poignant “Anchor Song” uses just her voice and a brass section to capture the loneliness of the sea. Though Debut is just as arty as anything she recorded with the Sugarcubes, the album’s club-oriented tracks provide an exciting contrast to the rest of the album’s delicate atmosphere. Björk’s playful energy ignites the dance-pop-like “Big Time Sensuality” and turns the genre on its head with “There’s More to Life Than This.” Recorded live at the Milk Bar Toilets, it captures the dancefloor’s sweaty, claustrophobic groove, but her impish voice gives it an almost alien feel. But the album’s romantic moments may be its most striking; “Venus as a Boy” fairly swoons with twinkly vibes and lush strings, and Björk’s vocals and lyrics — “His wicked sense of humor/Suggests exciting sex” — are sweet and just the slightest bit naughty. With harpist Corky Hale, she completely reinvents “Like Someone in Love,” making it one of her own ballads. Possibly her prettiest work, Björk’s horizons expanded on her other releases, but the album still sounds fresh, which is even more impressive considering electronic music’s whiplash-speed innovations. Initiated by the experimental US guitarist and lifelong Rypdal fan Henry Kaiser, we put together a Rune Grammofon allstar band including keyboardist and long time Rypdal side-kick Ståle Storløkken (Elephant9, Supersilent), bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (Scorch Trio, The Thing), drummer Gard Nilssen (Bushman´s Revenge), guitarists Even Helte Hermansen (Bushman´s Revenge) and Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen, Finnish guitarist Raoul Björkenheim (Scorch Trio) and Swedish guitarist Reine Fiske (Dungen). Kaiser also played and produced while Hans Magnus Ryan (Motorpsycho) added bits and pieces and Jim O´Rourke beamed in his exquisite contributions to “Sunrise” from Tokyo. Bill Frisell, Nels Cline and David Torn delivered solo interpretations, Cline with the aid of cellist Erik Friedlander. Sky Music is their birthday present to Terje Rypdal at 70.
Guitarist and composer Terje Rypdal (1947) is probably as close as one gets to a living legend in Norwegian music. First making a name for himself as a teenager with pop-rock group The Vanguards, this was followed by the inevitable passage through psychedelia with The Dream, releasing their only album, Get Dreamy, in 1967. The following year Rypdal released the extraordinary Bleak House, the first album in his own name. Then followed the self-titled album from Min Bul – his trio with Bjørnar Andresen and Espen Rud – before a lifelong and fruitful relation with ECM would see the release of a large number of great albums, taking in jazz, rock oriented albums, symphonies, large ensemble works and various collaborations. The last few years he has also played live with Elephant9 on several occasions.
