Am Weary, Don’t Let Me Rest’ is Icelandic composer Snorri Hallgrímsson’s sophomore LP and it arrives almost five years to the date after his critically acclaimed debut Orbit. A recurring theme on the album is the constant struggle between blissful ignorance and painful awareness. The title is a battle call – that no matter how tiring it gets, staying enlightened is not only our duty but it’s what gives us compassion, empathy, and understanding. The record captures Snorri at his best – moments of heartwrenching melancholia are interspersed with dramatic orchestral swells that somehow always find a hopeful resolution. He is nothing if not honest, giving us an intimate insight into his inner world. The nine gorgeous compositions are arranged for piano, string orchestra, trombone, choir and his haunting falsetto voice. The record is paired with visual art by Leigh Wells – who also provided the covers for his double EP Landbrot – and mastered by our frequent collaborator Martyn Heyne.

Slow Leaves’ latest album, Meantime, is about waiting for something momentous to occur in life, and how all the mundane stuff that happens during the wait actually constitutes what is meaningful. If you blink, you miss it; if you think too much, you miss it. If you’re lucky, in the meantime, there’s love and there’s death and not much less. Grant Davidson, the Winnipeg based artist behind Slow Leaves says, “I see this album as a love letter, a collection of messes that fit neatly within a regular life if there is such a thing. In that sense, I guess these songs serve as a reminder for myself, since I’m forgetful, that all moments are equal in that they pass through us once only in long stretches of boredom or by bursts of love and death. After Vladimir Horowitz’s 1982 barnstorming Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Sonata on last month’s BBC Music Magazine cover disc, I was struck by the space and the sense Boris Giltburg finds in this titan. Admittedly he embraces the composer’s compact 1931 revision where Horowitz played a splashier composite version of that and the 1918 original. But this makes total, thematically interconnected sense. The passages of melancholy introspection bathe in a gentle air, and the climaxes – especially the bell ringing clamour at the heart of the first movement – never disappoint, though Giltburg’s is not an obvious bravura. I’d have liked a little more of the exuberant hoof-stampings in the finale, where Simon TrpΩeski’s EMI alternative – my top choice of the 1931 version for Radio 3’s Building a Library some years back – scores highest.
