Like the Beatles and Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson is one of the handful of artists that can release an album of their number one singles. Number Ones includes his solo chart toppers in the UK and abroad from the period beginning with his Off the Wall album right up to the new song “One More Chance”, a collaboration with R Kelly. The remaining 17 songs on the album are all classics drawn from the disco-soul Off the Wall, the funky Thriller, the good Bad, the safe Dangerous, the semi-best-of History and the weak Invincible. Regardless of whether the bulk of Number Ones has appeared on other greatest hits albums, this is still an incredible selection of Michael Jackson’s best music.

Melvins will reinterpret their own catalog and showcase some new covers on the grunge giant’s massive new Five Legged Dog, a 36-track LP that doubles as the group’s first-ever acoustic album.
“I knew I wanted to do something ridiculously big. Thirty-six songs reimagined by us acoustically is certainly ridiculous but it works! The magic of the songs is still there regardless of it being acoustic,” Buzz Osbourne said in a statement of the pandemic-recorded album.
“Since we weren’t touring we had the time to do something of this size. I’m very excited about this record. Dale [Crover] and Steven [McDonald] did a fantastic job on this. I think it’s a very special record. I can’t think of anyone else who’s done something like this.”

The mastermind behind Devo’s ironic and provocative electronic pop, Mark Mothersbaugh later enjoyed success composing for film and television. In keeping with Devo’s dehumanized, automaton image, Mothersbaugh obscured the details of his upbringing, although it is known he co-founded the group in 1972 with keyboardist Jerry Casale, a fellow art student at Kent State University. A pioneering force behind the marriage of music and video, Devo’s futuristic image and robotic pop sound underscored their stated (albeit tongue-in-cheek) belief in mankind’s cultural de-evolution. With their deliberately soulless 1978 cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction,” the group landed a contract with major label Warner Bros. The album Freedom of Choice went platinum on the strength of the band’s million-selling pop hit “Whip It,” but after subsequent efforts appeared to diminishing critical and commercial returns, Devo disappeared for the better part of the mid-’80s. Mothersbaugh then moved into composing commercial jingles and soundtracks, scoring the children’s television favorites Pee-Wee’s Playhouse and Rugrats in addition to feature films like Bottle Rocket, Happy Gilmore, and Rushmore. He resumed his Devo activities with 1988’s Total Devo and occasionally re-formed the group over the decade to follow; Mothersbaugh additionally opened his own Los Angeles-based production company, Mutato Muzika.

Lynne Arriale has made her mark with a number of CDs of her own during her career. This predominantly trio date with bassist Omer Avital and drummer Anthony Pinciotti, adding tenor saxophonist Bill McHenry on several songs, mixes originals and covers of pop songs. Arriale’s songwriting skills match her chops at the piano. The driving post-bop vehicle “Elements” provides a solid opener for Arriale’s trio, with the pianist’s unpredictable blues constantly shifting. Her rambunctious Irish jig “Convergence” features McHenry’s powerful tenor and Arriale’s furious solo. “The Simple Things” is a low-key, lyrical ballad played by the trio. The infectious “Here and Now” draws from multiple musical influences from around the world, showcasing McHenry’s wailing tenor. The Middle Eastern-flavored “Dance of the Rain” includes an unidentified oud player, with Pinciotti presumably being playing the hand percussion. Arriale also shines with her fresh interpretations of the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun,” Sting’s “Sister Moon,” and the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black.” Only Nine Inch Nails’ “Something I Can Never Have” never manages to gain traction.
