Three years after the release of Sullivan Fortner’s charming Impulse! Records debut, Aria, the 31-year-old New Orleans-bred pianist and composer returns with his enchanting sophomore effort, Moments Preserved, which finds him leading a sterling trio with bassist Ameen Saleem and drummer Jeremy “Bean” Clemons. Produced by Grammy-winning Brian Bacchus, Moments Preserved arrived at the end of a productive recording period; Fortner participated on six recording sessions in less than two months. Nevertheless, he hails Moments Preserved as one of the “most honest and emotionally direct” albums he’s made yet. While gathering tunes for the album, he reflected on many key life moments that have occurred since winning the 2008 Leonore Annenberg Arts Fellowship and the 2015 Cole Porter Fellowship. Those moments include concluding his eight-year tenure in Roy Hargrove’s band then emerging as a bandleader.

“Sweet Baboo” is the stage name of Stephen Black, a musician from rural North Wales now based in Cardiff. Before becoming a solo artist, he played with the band JT MOuse. On “The Boombox Ballads”, his fifth release, Sweet Baboo wanted to explore more what it was to be a ‘singer’ as opposed to a ‘singer songwriter’, a term – that to him at least – seems to have picked up some negative connotations in recent years. With that in mind, there was a tentative channelling of Harry Nilsson and latter day Scott Walker in both his songwriting and by working with an arranger (Paul Jones) for the first time who helped him paint the most vivid accompaniments possible.

I’m a big sci-fi fan, and the best science fiction is generally a social commentary based in a futuristic universe. I feel like we’re living in that time. These three have in common the fact that they are among the most sought after French musicians on the Jazz scene. Claude Nougaro, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Tania Maria, Vince Mendoza and Didier Lockwood are a sample of the many artists who have surrounded themselves with their talents, on stage or in the studio.
For the last twenty years or so, they have crossed paths in many formations as sideman, while defending their respective leader projects.
Having gone through a very wide range of original repertoires, it is this time around the songs of Broadway that they decided to meet, as a passionate return, a homage to the melody, or as so many new explorations of a language that became more mature.

Since forming in Leeds in 2009 Submotion Orchestra have carved out their own special place in the UK’s ever-changing musical landscape. The 7 piece band’s fusion of bass heavy electronica, jazz, soul and much more besides has made them a favourite of the likes of Gilles Peterson, Trevor Nelson and Jo Whiley, whilst their live show has seen them play festivals around the world and sell out venues such as London’s famous KOKO.

Written over two years in the remote Welsh countryside with just ‘passing sheep and a rusty ping-pong table for company’ and recorded in Brighton, Alium has been a true group effort with every band member involved in the writing and recording process, something that is reflected in the album’s varied nature.
From neon synth strafed opener ‘Awakening’, to the bruising 21st century soul of ‘Time Will Wait’, the tense cinematic drama of ‘Bring Back The Wolf’, ‘The Hounds’’ late night/early morning jazz workout and the unashamedly big pop moment that is ‘Trust Lust’, Alium may be a dazzlingly eclectic record showcasing the band’s myriad talents, but thanks to producer Ruckspin’s deft touch remains a satisfyingly coherent whole.
With a busy summer schedule that will see the band play over a dozen festivals in 7 different countries and a full UK tour lined up for later in the year Alium looks set to cap a triumphant year for the band as they continue to push the boundaries of what an ‘electronica’ band can and should be.

Recorded between 1969 and 1972, this celebrated Strauss album from Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker includes what is still widely considered the benchmark version of the Four Last Songs, sung by Austrian soprano Gundula Janowitz. The centrepiece of the programme is coupled with Karajan’s glowing account of Strauss’s tone poem Tod und Verklärung and the late Metamorphosen. Janowitz’s ethereal performances of these most famous of orchestral songs written for soprano have challenged all comers for decades.
