Adelmo Fornaciari, more commonly known by his stage name Zucchero Fornaciari or simply Zucchero, is an Italian rock singer and Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. His music is largely inspired by gospel, soul and rock music, and alternates between ballads and more rhythmic boogie-like pieces. Zucchero’s voice is gritty and textured, but he sings with a great sensitivity and lyricism, and these same qualities are mirrored in his songwriting. By blending blues, pop, and adult contemporary, Zucchero’s music can be quite affecting. He is credited as the “father of Italian blues”, introducing blues to the big stage in Italy. Zucchero is one of the few European blues artists who still enjoy great international success.

Artur Menezes is a highly respected Brazilian blues rock guitarist, currently based in Los Angeles. Menezes headlined numerous festivals and toured across South America, Mexico and the UK before moving the US in 2016. He won the Gibson/Albert King Award for Best Guitarist at the Blues Foundation’s 2018 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, where he also took third place in the overall competition. In 2019 he was the Grand Prize Winner in a contest promoted by Ernie Ball, winning the opportunity to perform at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival. FADING AWAY, Menezes’s fifth album (his second in the US), showcases his impressive guitar skills as well as his inspired singing and songwriting, with 10 original compositions. This is Jerry Lynn Williams third album, counting the first two High Mountain albums “Hoedown” and “Canyon” as his first two. Released in 1972 on David Briggs Spindizzy imprint for Columbia Records, this like seemingly all of his albums disappeared in a blaze of no publicity. Which is a shame, because it showcases a great soulful singer and guitar player, as well as a songwriter who would write hits for Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and Delbert McClinton, among many others, later in life. Jerry passed away in 2005, having made only a handful of records in a 40 year career, but each album is like a black pearl, hard to find and very desirable. Jerry Williams covers “A Whiter Shade Of Pale” on this album and instead of the embarrassment that every other cover attempt I have heard became, he makes it his own. I was ecstatic to find this album available on CD and bought it immediately. Hopefully, there are more to come as Asia and Europe continue to demonstrate a greater appreciation for our musical history then we in the States do.

Legends is one of the most musically accomplished super groups of all time. Struttin’ Our Stuff, Bill Wyman’s first album in nearly 15 years, is a surprisingly successful collection of blues and rock & roll. Nevertheless, there are a number of fine moments here, from covers of “Green River,” “Tobacco Road” and “Mystery Train” to guest appearences from Eric Clapton, Albert Lee, Peter Frampton and Georgie Fame. Hubert Sumlin was a brilliant guitarist who was a Howlin’ Wolf sideman and a vast influence on Eric Clapton and Peter Green amongst others. This killer album started with a five-week tour of Europe with these musicians before they hit the UK. There was a lot of songwriting in hotel rooms which paid off handsomely. Here are 5 brand new songs from Hubert, a couple of well thought-out instrumentals and Hubert playing his usual imaginative lead guitar on 3 new songs by Richard Studholme. Musically, it’s all tough blues but within that there is tremendous variation ranging from some nice modern touches to a couple of Jimmy Reedish tracks with just two guitars and drums. Altogether a superb team effort and a real revelation.

While that first album had little commercial success, the band’s relentless touring behind it led to a buzz that led Eric Clapton to enlist Duane Allman to take part on his 1970 Derek and the Dominos album which produced “Layla.” Produced by Tom Dowd, marking his first album with the band, Idlewild South was recorded in a variety of cities, including New York, Miami and Macon, GA, the band’s adopted home, because of their hectic performance schedule. Most of the songs, including two of their most iconic – Gregg Allman and Kim Payne’s “Midnight Rider” and Dickey Betts’ “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” – were road-tested before they were ever recorded. The album’s title comes from the group’s name for the run-down, isolated hunting cabin the band used for rehearsals and partying. The farmhouse, which they rented for the princely sum of $165 a month, was located on a manmade lake outside Macon, and people came and went with such frequency, the band compared it to New York’s airport of the same name (later changed to John F. Kennedy International). Much of the material on the album was first created in that cabin, where the band’s “brotherhood came to pass,” according to Allmans roadie (and “Midnight Rider” co-writer) Kim Payne. The album didn’t sell well at first, but eventually peaked at #38 on Billboard, setting the stage for their 1971 breakthrough, At Fillmore East.

In November of 2007, legendary guitarist Jeff Beck took on the stage of London’s Ronnie Scott’s, a notorious jazz club with a rich history. Unfortunately, given the size of the venue, only a few were lucky enough to see him and his band – Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Jason Rebello (keyboards) and Tal Wilkenfeld (bass) – perform.
This Blu-ray disc offers twenty one songs that were played by Beck and his band throughout the course of the concert. They cover a variety of genres including rock, jazz, blues, fusion, and even rockabilly. To the delight of the audience, during a few of the songs, Beck was also joined by Joss Stone, Imogen Heap as well as his former Yardbird’s bandmate Eric Clapton
What truly impresses in this show is the musical versatility Beck and his band showcase. They easily skip through a number of different genres that have been a key part of their music throughout the years (interestingly enough, even though Beck has been performing with Vinnie Colaiuta and Jason Robello for only a few years now, they very much sound as if they have been together for a very, very long time). Unsurprisingly, from the moody Pink Floyd-esque Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers (with a fantastic solo by Tal Wilkenfeld) to the to the funky Led Boots, to the classic People Get Ready with Joss Stone , to the terrific new arrangement of Blnaket with Imogen Heap, to the outstanding Little Brown Bird and You Need Love with Eric Clapton, this concert offers a little bit of everything for everyone.
