“One does not create by adding, but by subtracting”, said the film director Robert Bresson, quoted by Jacques Drillon in the booklet that accompanies this new recording of Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin by Tedi Papavrami, seventeen years after a first version that already made quite an impact on the discography. Tedi Papavrami decided to start working on them again when he was in lockdown, and these pieces – which, in truth, he had never stopped playing – gave him new sensations: “something more alive, more sparkling appeared to me”… A more refined vision too: “Unquestionably, Tedi Papavrami did not want to be left behind. He too has become radicalised. He has dispensed with vibrato, aside from a few rare and delightful exceptions, and has renounced the emphatic basses, the brilliant high notes, and all the grandstanding effects that violinists usually indulge in, and which have characterised the most renowned interpretations, so much so that they are considered to be immutable “traditions”. Clearly, he has chosen to resort solely to phrasing and sonority in order to achieve expression”, says Jacques Drillon.

For several decades, the Dutch Swing College Band was one of Europe’s top regular groups, able to play both Dixieland and swing with equal skill. This LP contains some full band selections (including a Dixieland-ish “Riverboat Shuffle”), combo numbers with the band’s two clarinetists, solos, and features for pianist Teddy Wilson with the rhythm section. This celebratory occasion (thus far only available on LP) resulted in some highly enjoyable music that deserves to be reissued on CD.

The established Salzburg violinist Thomas Albertus Irnberger has already played with the greatest musical personalities and leading ensembles of our time such as the Royal Philhamonic Orchestra. For his most recent recording featuring the Violin Concerto in D by Igor Stravinsky, the versatile virtuoso Irnberger can refer to the collaboration with another world-class orchestra: the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Doron Salomon. In addition to this work from 1931, the Concert Fantasy on Russian themes in B minor, Op. 33 by Stravinsky’s teacher Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov is included on this album. Together with Paul Kaspar, piano, with whom he shares a long artistic collaboration, Irnberger also interprets Stravinsky’s Suite Italienne, the Duo concertant for violin and piano as well as the Danse russe (from Petrushka) and Chanson russe (from Mavra), borrowed from stage works.
