Following on from their highly acclaimed cycle of the 9 Vaughan Williams symphonies, Andrew Manze and the RLPO have recorded a spectacular Job, taken from a live performance at the famed Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool. RVW’s inspiration for Job arose from William Blake’s illustrations for The Book of Job, a collection of water colours from 1805, and the later engravings from 1822. 1928 was the centenary of Blake’s death, and RVW attempted to interest Serge Diaghilev, the foremost artistic power in the world of ballet to take it up but to no avail. The work has since become a concert piece after a handful of staged performances in the early 1930s. The score is in 9 sections telling the story of Job. The music is notable for its dramatic contrasts. The music for God being powerful and majestic, that for Satan is powerfully dissonant with a violence that foreshadows music encountered in the 4th and 6th symphonies and the piano concerto. RVW had seen service in France in the First World War, and what he saw there undoubtedly coloured his musical language, and the horrors endured by Job are depicted in some of RVVs most driven and dissonant music.

In a world where artists sound too alike, Ralph Beeby really stands out. He has one of the richest voices we’ve heard in days and his vocal performance on this record is professional and made us have to rewind the song over and over the first time, we heard it. The lyrics are original, well-written, and mesh perfectly with the vocal melodies. The instrumental is beautiful and the production of this record is beautifully simple. The guitarist Raphaella Smits is fascinated by every aspect of Argentina, a country where music is part of everyday life and the guitar is omnipresent. Karl Kohn is represented on this impressive two-album set by all of his solo and chamber music for flute. Kohn writes that “my music since the early 1960’s has been firmly re-connected with the broader heritage of Western art music, either by specific and direct quotation or “parody,” or – prevailingly – by more oblique allusions to characteristics of past style.” Though he has spent seven decades working in California, the 95 year old composer writes that “I am struck how it seems to reflect, first, my Viennese musical heritage, and then my training in a neo-classical tradition.” The performances feature the American flute virtuoso, Rachel Rudich, the dedicatee of many of Kohn’s works.

The legacy of the celebrity castrato Senesino has endured for centuries. He is known to us today primarily as Handel’s leading man for 13 seasons in London, and he was recognised the world over for his moving dramatic interpretations, fiery singing, and singular, over-the-top divo personality. After Haydn composed The Seven Last Words for chamber orchestra as a devotional accompaniment to the Good Friday liturgy at Cadiz Cathedral in 1786, several other arrangements were made during his lifetime, by himself and others, all of them familiar to us now: as an oratorio with soloists and chorus, and in string quartet and solo keyboard transcriptions.

Maurice Ravel composed a number of works which have become classics of the repertoire both for solo piano and for orchestra. On the present disc, all except one work were first conceived for piano, which raises the question how it is possible to transfer such pianistic music to the orchestra without making it sound like a mere ‘colourized’ version. Ravel’s orchestral writing was the result of a long apprenticeship and careful study of orchestration treatises as well as scores, notably of works by Rimsky-Korsakov and Richard Strauss. Although his skills as an orchestrator are much admired today, his ability to coax new sounds out of the orchestra wasn’t always appreciated in his own time, however – in 1907 the critic Pierre Lalo complained that ‘in Ravel’s orchestra, no instrument retains its natural sound…’
