Saxophonist and clarinetist Shabaka Hutchings is a real connoisseur of sounds and fusions, and a true explorer. Each of his new musical expeditions pushes him further towards the top of today’s jazz scene… Born in London in 1984, he grew up under the Barbadian sun before moving back to England in 1999 where he joined the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Here, he caught the attention of saxophonist Soweto Kinch and started hanging out with big names like Courtney Pine and Jerry Dammers from the Specials. In 2011, Shabaka launched Sons of Kemet, a surprising quartet featuring a tuba and two drums. A complete oddity, halfway between a marching band and a chamber orchestra, that blends jazz, Caribbean and African music, Egyptian influences, and flavours from New Orleans and Ethiopia. The aptly titled The Comet Is Coming – no relations to Sons Of Kemet – is another adaptation of jazz language. But does it still qualify as jazz? It doesn’t really matter. As a sort of electro-drip-fed Sun Ra of the third millennium, Shabaka Hutchings – who calls himself King Shabaka here – is supported by a duo composed of Danalogue on the keyboards and Betamax on drums and percussions. It’s a rather avant-garde programme set to overpowered percussive rhythmic and hypnotising brass improvisations. Sun Ra, as we said… It’s hard not to mention him who was idolised (or hated) for his lengthy compositions and mind-blowing, almost psychedelic performances as well as for the odd cosmic philosophy he preached. The Comet is Coming’s second album, Trust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery, remains profoundly attached to its time, in which Shabaka injects his philosophy with contemporary elements far removed from master Ra’s semantic like when he hands over the microphone to rapper/spoken-word performer Kate Tempest on Blood Of The Past.  – Marc Zisman

“From song to symphony, from the Bim-Bom theatre to radio orchestral recordings, from theatre music to performances at the “Warsaw Autumn” International Festival of Contemporary Music. Indeed, it was a career “on its own note”, as the subtitle of Edward Pałłasz’s (1936–2019) memoirs says. Surprisingly, the memoirs are devoid of regret that the creator of the Symphony “1976” was not allowed to complete his studies in composition, despite having studying music at lower levels. The road to a genuine success was complicated, winding and full of adventures and discoveries; moreover, the composer’s style that emerged on that journey was free from temporary trends or ideological obligations.

The present album includes a number of works that perfectly illustrate the ease with which Edward Pałłasz employed various types of compositional techniques related to the choral music.

In diversifying the A&R focus of Stax, Al Bell brought in Detroit producer Don Davis to work with core artists Carla Thomas and Johnnie Taylor. He brought with him a Motor City vocal group called the Dramatics. Davis turned to fellow Detroit producer and songwriter Tony Hestor to work with the group. Hestor wrote a great song with “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get” and crafted an extraordinary arrangement as well. Annotator Bowman writes, “The slight Latin feel fit the first wave of disco like a glove while the use of claves and congas combined with a fuzzed lead guitar line and seraphonous strings and horns.” The chemistry of artist, song, and arrangement drove the record all the way to #3 R&B and #9 Pop in the summer of 1971 on the Volt label. The follow-up was “In the Rain,” of which then-lead vocalist Ron Banks recalls, “We looked at each other and said, ‘Whoa, that’s a smash.’ And for once we were right.” The song went to #5 Pop. The Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get reissue contains no fewer than nine bonus tracks including charting hits “Fell for You” and “Hey You! Get Off My Mountain,” both recorded in Detroit instead of Memphis. The closer “Hum a Song (From Your Heart)” was produced at Atlantic South Criterion Studios by the legendary production triumvirate of Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, and Arif Mardin.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Skye Records

Although Chuck Rainey was among New York’s most ubiquitous and in-demand R&B and pop session players of the 1960s and ’70s, he didn’t record very many albums on his own. The Chuck Rainey Coalition gives us a glimpse of the electric bassist in the driver’s seat. Rainey doesn’t do that much stretching, and most of the time, this collection of instrumental jazz/R&B simmers without really igniting. Nonetheless, there are a few cuts that stand out. Rainey really digs into a funky interpretation of the “Theme from Peter Gunn,” and his soul-minded arrangement of “Harlem Nocturne” is fairly imaginative. Meanwhile, uptempo tunes like “Get It Together,” “It’s Gonna Rain” and “The Lone Stranger” are kind of catchy, though hardly mind-blowing. Overall, this isn’t a bad album, but it could have been much better. ~ Alex Henderson

The Chuck Mangione Quartet – Bellavia (1975/2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 38:28 minutes | 820 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © A&M

This quick follow-up to Chase the Clouds Away was designed as sort of a portrait of the bustling Mangione family home (Bellavia being his mother’s maiden name). Certainly there is more energy on tracks like “Listen to the Wind,” the big band streaks of “Torreano,” and the appropriately revolving riffs of “Carousel” than on the previous record, with Joe LaBarbera, Gerry Niewood, and Chip Jackson forming the core of support for Chuck’s more vigorous orchestral writing. Chuck appears on the conductor’s podium, flugelhorn, Rhodes electric piano and — on “Dance of the Windup Toy” (otherwise dominated by an unnecessary LaBarbera drum solo) — celeste, acquitting himself well in all regards. While you don’t get the instant buzz of the best Mercury-period music here, this is still one of Mangione’s better A&M releases. – Richard S. Ginell

The composers whose music is featured on the present album lived and worked in Czechoslovakia between the two world wars, and their fates were afflicted by the monstrous Nazi regime. Viktor Ullmann, who before WWII held the post of Kapellmeister at the New German Theatre, wrote Quartet no.3 while he was detained at the Theresienstadt ghetto-camp. Hans Krása completed the Theme and Variations in 1936, yet he only saw it performed in Theresienstadt, along with his children’s opera Brundibár. Erwin Schulhoff’s Five Pieces reveal his zest for rhythm and dance, as well as his evidently having been inspired by the music of the Viennese salons, Italy and Spain. Pavel Haas’s Quartet no.2, dating from 1925, serves as vivid proof of the claim that the composer was the most gifted pupil of Leoš Janáček.

This AAMRecords’ latest release, with the Academy of Ancient Music joining forces with The Choir of Keble College and director Matthew Martin, is a landmark recording of Francisco Vall’s ‘forgotten’ Missa Regalis [1740]. Performed from a new edition by Simon Heighes, Valls’ fascinating (and frequently confusticating) juxtaposition of ancient and ‘modern’ compositional styles provides a intriguing glimpse into the treasure-trove of Spanish baroque music, much of which remains relatively unknown to the wider world.

August, 1970: With Jim Morrison’s ongoing Miami obscenity trial casting an ominous shadow over the band, The Doors flew to England to play the Isle of Wight Festival. Waiting for them at “The Last Great Festival” were over 600,000 fans who had already torn down the barriers, crashed the gates, and enjoyed performances by the world’s top acts such as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Miles Davis and Joni Mitchell. The Doors took the stage at 2 am, playing with the weight of the trial on their backs, and showed fans they still had the magic that had propelled them to the top during the Summer of Love. “We played with a controlled fury and Jim was in fine vocal form,” said Doors organist Ray Manzarek. “He sang for all he was worth, but moved nary a muscle. Dionysus had been shackled.” Less than a year later, The Doors were no more. Here, for the very first time, is the last Doors concert ever filmed. The Doors: Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970.

In November 2018, The Doobie Brothers returned to the Beacon Theatre for the first time in 25 years to perform two of their landmark albums, Toulouse Street and The Captain And Me. This Blu Ray edition captures the full video performance from both albums in their entirety, plus three encore tracks.
This historic performance at the Beacon offered an opportunity for Doobie fans to hear deep cuts and songs never-before performed live by the band, such as “Mamaloi,” “O’Connelly Corners,” “Ukiah,” and “The Captain And Me.” The show begins with the 10 songs from the group’s second studio album, Toulouse Street. Originally released in 1972, it’s been certified platinum. Several of the band’s most popular songs first appeared on the album, including “Jesus Is Just Alright” and “Listen To The Music,” the latter presented here with a brand new arrangement featuring horns.
Next, The Doobie Brothers played its third studio release, The Captain And Me. Originally released in 1973, it reached #7 on the Album Chart and has been certified double platinum. Hits include “Long Train Runnin’,” “China Grove” and “South City Midnight Lady.” The show ended with a three-song encore that included their #1 hit “Black Water.”
