Catherine Lara –Daniel Pantchenko CHORUS 1996

T Bone Burnett has created a wildly influential career as both a producer and singer/songwriter, helping to establish the foundation for modern Roots and Americana music. So, it comes as bit of a surprise to hear his latest – a collaboration with Jay Bellerose and Keefus Ciancia – an eclectic, experimental record mixing dance, electronica, trance and tribal drumming that sound little like Burnett’s past catalogue. Bellerose is a percussionist who has worked with everyone from Elton John and Leon Russell to Allen Toussaint and Ray LaMontagne, while composer/producer/musician Ciancia has worked with Nikka Costa and Cassandra Wilson, among others.

The Lion King like the original 1994 version features unforgettable music by an award-winning team, including Oscar and GRAMMY-winning superstar Elton John and Oscar and GRAMMY-winning lyricist Tim Rice, who’ve written an uplifting new song, “Never Too Late,” performed by John, that features an African choir and will appear in the film’s end credits and also on the Walt Disney Records original motion picture soundtrack. “Just hearing that music strikes you deeply,” Favreau said. “Even if you don’t know the film or stage show, there is a spiritual strength in it. But if you know the film, and if you grew up with this music now it can suddenly and immediately evoke the story itself, as well as all the connected memories and emotions that you have from your own past experience with ‘The Lion King,’ or from the time of your life that you were in, or your childhood, or the life events it’s connected to.

“American Epic” compilation series is a collection of releases of music associated with the film series “The American Epic”, a historical documentaries are a journey back in time to the “Big Bang” of modern popular music.

In the 1920s, as radio took over the pop music business, record companies were forced to leave their studios in major cities in search of new styles and markets. Ranging the mountains, prairies, rural villages, and urban ghettos of America, they discovered a wealth of unexpected talent. The recordings they made of all the ethnic groups of America democratized the nation and gave a voice to everyone. Country singers in the Appalachians, Blues guitarists in the Mississippi Delta, Gospel preachers across the south, Cajun fiddlers in Louisiana, Tejano groups from the Texas Mexico border, Native American drummers in Arizona, and Hawaiian musicians were all recorded. For the first time, a woman picking cotton in Mississippi, a coalminer in Virginia or a tobacco farmer in Tennessee could have their thoughts and feelings heard on records played in living rooms across the country. It was the first time America heard itself.

This is not “remastering”, in the normal sense, but something closer to fine art restoration. The intent is not for people to marvel at the antiquity of these discs, but rather to experience them as vital, immediate performances that speak to us as directly as they did on the day they were recorded—not simply great art for their time, but great art for all times. Engineer Nicholas Bergh has reassembled this recording system from original parts and it is now the only one left in the world. The system consists of a single microphone, a towering six-foot amplifier rack, and a live record-cutting lathe, powered by a weight-driven pulley system of clockwork gears. The musicians have roughly three minutes to record their song direct to disc before the weight hits the floor. In the 1920s, they called this “catching lightning in a bottle”.

Composed by the Samoan musician Opetaia Foa’i, Mark Mancina (who helped put a South African spin on Elton John’s songs for The Lion King), and Hamilton mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda, the movie’s soundtrack is an uplifting mix of Disney storytelling and traditional Oceanian music, sung both in English and the Polynesian language of Tokelau. It also features beautiful performances by Hawaiian actress Auli’i Cravalho, who voices the film’s heroine, Moana.

For nearly 13 years Brandi Carlile was a cult favorite with a loyal fanbase before her big mainstream breakout moment in 2018 with her sixth album By the Way, I Forgive You Since then, she’s become a bona-fide celebrity with a best-selling memoir, a celebrated supergroup (the Highwomen), six Grammys and a slew of A-list friends who pop up on her charming Instagram account. She’s been name-checked by Barack Obama as a favorite, produced a record for Tanya Tucker, performed Joni’s Blue in its entirety in concert, and released duets with Alicia Keys and Sam Smith. There’s a lot riding on her follow-up album, and In These Silent Days is a knockout on a par with such classics as Tapestry, Madman Across the Water, Leon Russell, and Blue. In fact, there are shades of all those records here. It opens with the piano drama of “Right On Time,” a gorgeous, sweeping ballad that’s a showcase for her powerhouse voice (much like 2018’s “The Joke”). The excellent “Letter to My Past” sounds like a love letter to Elton John circa 1971, while “You and Me on the Rock” is practically a tribute to Joni Mitchell’s sunny early ’70s jangle folk-and both are absolutely perfect. “Rock” also shows off Carlile’s Bernie Taupin-level poetry: “I built paper planes when I learned to fly/ Like a 747 falling out of the sky/ I folded them crooked and now I’m wondering why/ I could always end up in the water.” Carlile, who created the album with longtime bandmates Phil and Tim Hanseroth, worked while holed up at her Washington State “compound” during COVID lockdowns and as she was penning her stirring memoir. She has said all the “uncertainty” led her to more “dramatic” places of her brain. You hear it in the stark, spine-shivering “Mama Werewolf”: “Your mama is a werewolf with long sharp teeth/ I’m up all night when the world should sleep … If my good intentions go running wild/ If I cause you pain, my own sweet child/ Won’t you promise me you’ll be the one/ My silver bullet in the gun.” It all feels intensely personal and you might sigh with relief when she later gives her daughters the buttery lullaby “Stay Gentle.” Stripped-down “This Time Tomorrow” could’ve been a Highwomen outtake, “Broken Horses” is rollicking Southern rock, and “Sinners, Saints and Fools” uses strings and punchy percussion like bright spotlights on Carlile’s darkest corners, before going out with a wild, arena-rock flash. The album ends in the same dramatic fashion it started, with “Throwing Good After Bad”-a heartbreaker of a piano ballad that nods at all those aforementioned ’70s album influences. “Are you fantasizing?/ You’re taken us for granted/ I know you’re bored/ You always say I’m heavy-handed,” she sings and pulls at heartstrings. It’s at once so personal you might blush and so universal you might cry. Stunning. – Shelly Ridenour

Brandi Carlile does not lay idle. Between her new life as an LGBTQ mother which she openly displays or her activism with the association War Child, she has found time to return to the studio for the sixth time. As a mother, the hallucination of an America at the edge of cracking infused the story of what she considers the most intense of her career. By The Way, I Forgive You, entwined by the evangelical theme of forgiveness, co-produced by Shooter Jennings (the son of the late Waylon) and Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton and Lori McKenna) succeeds the country folk of The Firewatcher’s Daughter (2015). Ten tracks totalling 43 minutes, touching on topics such as Carlile’s family, politics, identity and the faithful twin Hanseroth (Fightings Machinists). The strings were arranged by the late Paul Buckmaster (Elton John, David Bowie, Rolling Stone or Leonard Cohen) and its all packed into an emotional style of country made for a broad audience. – Charlotte Saintoin

Lizzo – Special (2022) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Lizzo – Special (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 35:16 minutes | 418 MB | Genre: Pop, R&B, Rap
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Nice Life – Atlantic

The only sad thing about Lizzo’s fourth studio album is that it didn’t come out weeks earlier to light up the summer even faster. “Hi motherfucker/ Did you miss me?” she leaps right in on opener “The Sign.” Bouncy, sunny and glorious, it finds her touching on familiar themes: body empowerment (“I’m worth my weight”), self-confidence (“I’m still that bitch, yeah!”), dude problems (“I keep on writing these songs/ Because he keep on doing me wrong”) and that one line everyone will be singing for the next year (“I got that ‘oh hell no you can’t get this at the store’—whoooooaaaa!”). Lizzo has called in a Who’s Who of songwriters and producers to lend a hand, including mid-aughts superstar Max Martin for the title track, a blaze of R&B fire that encourages listeners to ignore the haters and remember: “In case nobody told you today/ You’re special.” A throw-pillow platitude for sure, but nobody pulls that off more believably than Lizzo. Gorgeous “If You Love Me” was written with English singer-songwriter Kid Harpoon, who also had a hand in Harry Styles’ Harry’s House—and honestly, the song wouldn’t be out of place on that record, with its blending of soul and ’70s Elton John vibes. On “Break Up Twice,” Mark Ronson continues to traffic in retro glory, helping Lizzo channel both Dusty Springfield and Lauryn Hill—the singer borrows liberally from “Doo Wop (That Thing)”—and samples the suave “Private Number” by William Clay and Judy Bell. In fact, this is a fun record for playing “name that sample.” A shout-out to her ladies, “Grrrls” nicks the carnival-like melody of the Beastie Boys’ “Girls.” “Naked” lifts the satiny smooth groove of Kool and the Gang’s “Summer Madness.” Layering on super funk bass, disco shimmer and—of course—a celebratory flute bridge, “About Damn Time” also weaves in a piano sample from “Hey DJ” by the World’s Famous Supreme Team. It’s a song made for roller-skating—and the carefree, self-assured lyrics might even convince you that’s a good idea: “Oh, I’m not the girl I was or used to be/ Uh, bitch, I might be better.” Soul-queen closer “Coldplay,” meanwhile, puts an elfin spin on that band’s “Yellow” and cribs the cool yacht-rock piano from “Sudden Death” by Quelle Chris & Chris Keys. Lizzo delves into some ’80s fun, too: Hyper-beat “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)” could be a workout anthem from that era, while “Everybody’s Gay” is delicious dance-floor cheese á la Midnight Star. But go ahead and get ready to be sick of “Birthday Girl,” because you’re going to hear it so much for the next decade. It’s pretty savvy to write a new spin on a happy-birthday song, even more so to make it just for the ladies, and brilliant to go staccato on the chorus—”Is it your birthday girl/ Let’s celebrate it”—so anyone can sing along.

Turnstiles is Billy Joel’s fourth studio album, originally released in May of 1976. The platinum album was written for Joel’s return to New York City after residing in California. Originally recorded under producer James William Guercio with individuals playing from Elton John’s band, the record did not satisfy Joel and he took it upon himself to produce his own alternative version. He rerecorded the album in New York with his own touring band, marking the first time they appeared in one of his albums. Turnstiles features hits “New York State of Mind”, “Say Goodbye to Hollywood”, and “James”.
