The songs included on this album are entirely original, stereotype-breaking material developed jointly by both performers. The combination of jazz and electric guitar with a baroque harpsichord, as well as occasionally a clavichord and percussion instruments, sounds fresh and original. The use of electronic effects, preparation and amplification of the harpsichord, as well as the enrichment of the performance means with percussion techniques make each composition surprising with its dynamic and expressive scale, despite the modest instrumentation. The combination of elements of contemporary classical avant-garde, jazz and Latin music is the basis for extensive improvisations. Both artists are virtuosos of their instruments, who prove once again that they do not set any limits for them in the creative process, musicians are able to create completely new sounds. However, they are not the goal in themselves, the essence is the music itself – energetic, trance-like, and sometimes nostalgic, which will seduce not only jazz lovers.

No-one could complain about a shortage of recordings of Schubert’s Trios, or ofNotturno: the discography boasts some truly sumptuous performances, whether by soloists assembled for the occasion (Gendron and the Menuhin siblings, Rose-Stern-Istomin, Cortot-Thibaud-Casals for the First), or existing ensembles (Beaux-Arts, Wanderer, etc.): but all the same, we can only welcome this new release from the Trio Elégiaque, made up of violinist Philippe Aïche – first violin of the Orchestre de Paris – Virginie Constant on the cello – winner of the Maria Canals prize – and François Dumont (winner of the Chopin and Queen Elizabeth prizes). The ensemble was set up a decade or so ago, and was quickly recognised as one of the most important chamber music ensembles in the European musical landscape. A first complete recording of Beethoven’s Trios was unanimously hailed by critics; the ensemble also enjoys rediscovering more neglected works (or more contemporary ones), like Rimsky-Korsakov’s Trio, or Pascal Dusapin’s, or the 4th by Nicolas Bacri which is dedicated to Dusapin, or even the Trios of Henri-Napoléon Reber… Talk about rare! This vision of Schubert, lyrical and yet transparent, is more than a match even for its most illustrious predecessors.

Trio con Brio Copenhagen returns to Orchid Classics with a triptych of Russian piano trios: two works by Shostakovich framing music by Arensky. These Russian composers lived through turning points in their country’s history. Arensky died in 1906, the year in which Shostakovich was born, and their output charts the trajectory of Russian and Soviet political and artistic history during those years. Arensky’s ardent Piano Trio No.1 was written in 1894, when Russian Romanticism was at its peak. Inspired by young love, the 17-year-old Shostakovich wrote his Piano Trio No.1 Poème in 1923 in Petrograd (St. Petersburg), finding expression for strong personal emotions via a musical language influenced by film scores. Just over 20 years later, in 1944, Shostakovich wrote his Piano Trio No. 2. By making use of Jewish music for the first time, he gave the greatest tragedies of the age a voice, while at the same time creating a music that displays an irrepressible spark of life.
