“Strauss: Metamorphoses & Wind Sonatina No. 1” is the second album in a series of six that the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg will release on the Berlin Classics label until 2025. For this album, the orchestra has chosen the internationally renowned conductor Riccardo Minasi. Originally, a concert under his baton was to take place at Salzburg’s “Großes Festspielhaus” in the 2020/21 season, but like so many events, it had to be canceled. Instead, the decision was made to record with repertoire whose instrumentation sizes were appropriate to the conditions: Richard Strauss “Metamorphosen” for 23 solo strings and the first Sonatina for 16 wind instruments. The repertoire thus selected highlights the individual sections of the orchestra, strings and winds, and illustrates the orchestra’s flexibility in seemingly effortlessly realigning itself for the repertoire at hand. It further demonstrates that the orchestra’s constant preoccupation with its core repertoire informs its approach to the music of later eras – impressively heard on the current album of High Romantic music by the late Richard Stauss.

Massimo Pupillo is a composer and multi-instrumentalist, mostly known for being a founding members of Zu, with whom he released 18 albums and played more than 2000 shows around the world.He has also kept a very open and multidisciplinary approach that led him to work with some of the most acclaimed figures in today’s world of arts: Romeo Castellucci, Chiara Guidi (of legendary avantgarde theatre group Societas Raffaello Sanzio), american choreographer Meg Stuart, french opera star Marie-Agnes Gillot, contemporary dance group Dewey Dell, world reknown dancer Yaman Okur, etc.He has collaborated live and on record with avant-garde musicians and composers such as Alvin Curran ( founder of Musica Elettronica Viva in 1966) , with world-famous piano duo of Katia & Marielle Labeque , with classical music virtuosos such as Viktoria Mullova and Giovanni Sollima. He has also recorded with Canadian soprano and orchestra conductor, Barbara Hannigan. Working with Katia Labeque he has had the huge honour of an album artwork designed by Storm Thorgerson, founder of Hipgnosis , probably one of the most important designers in music. With Katia Labeque, he has played and arranged tracks of an album of Moondog music that was released on the most important classical label ever, Deutsche Grammophon. Also with Katia Labeque he presented a special project at Paris’ Philharmonie in 2016, working, between others, with Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Bryce and Aaron Dessner (The National).

When I started work on Geyser last autumn I had decided I was done composing music that reflected the pain of the pandemic. This new piece was to be instead a celebration – of music, its welcome return and that unique atmosphere created by musicians when they meet to perform. Its mood was to be predominantly joyful and optimistic, while its title was a metaphor for the music’s underlying rhythmic energy, unleashed intermittently in ecstatic outbursts – like explosions of water and steam from a pressurised geothermal spring. (This idea of tension, boiling under the surface, is a theme I return to in a lot in my music.)

In the second installment of her recordings of Robert Schumann’s piano music, Jimin Oh-Havenith juxtaposes two key works from the famous “piano decade” of 1830-1840: the Kreisleriana op. 16 from 1838 and the Humoreske op. 20, composed a year later. In these pieces, Schumann pays homage to his two most important literary models, E.T.A. Hoffmann and Jean Paul. While in the Kreis-leriana, he merges suite and character piece into a fantastic collage of images, following the traces of Hoffmann’s alter ego, the ingeniously eccentric Kapellmeister Kreisler, the Humoreske is designed like an essay in tones. Here, Schumann congenially implements Jean Paul’s definition of humour as bridging the opposites of “Gemut” (emotion) and “Witz” (wit) that shape and tear the human apart. For every interpreter, it becomes an equally challenging and fulfilling task to shape Schumann’s language, rich in contrast and held together by subtle links, into a poetic cosmos.
