The Saxophones began as the solo project of Erenkov – a project that was loosely started over a decade ago but gained full momentum and dedication in recent years – he wanted to bring in some primitive drum and percussion playing and couldn’t think of anyone more suited than his wife. “I wanted to share the band with her,” he says. “Plus, I would be devastated if I had to leave for weeks at a time to tour without her.”The songs which make up the debut album were formed and written during a period in which the pair were living on a boat during a very wet winter in the San Francisco Bay Area. “Much of the music was written over rainy mornings on acoustic guitar inside the cabin of our boat and outside of the city in a little guesthouse in Pt. Reyes,” he reflects. It was then recorded in Portland over 10 days, the recording was an intense and occasionally tense process. Taking inspiration from 1950s exotica and Hawaiian albums (Edhen Abhez, Buddy Fo, and Martin Denny), 1970s outsider Italian songwriter Vittorio Impiglia, and a host of third-stream and West coast jazz records, the result is a unique offering.

It’s inescapable: love him or hate him, Steve Jobs was a real character. By turns a visionary, an inventor, a despot, a manipulator, he took his computer business to the top of the industry. Long a public figure, he is now a character in an opera, brought to life brilliantly by Mark Campbell and composer Mason Bates, two great explorers of the most offbeat corners of American lyric art. Their opera, The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs , first performed in 2017 in Santa Fe, presents the IT magnate and his inner circle around the time of the foundation and development of their business, his friends and his enemies, all in an extravagant musical language, in which Bates introduces a leitmotif for every new character and situation, with instrumental colours, dedicated themes, and also interjections of electronic sounds, from – you’ve guessed it – computers and mobile phones made by the firm itself. There’s also some jazz thrown in (the symphonic jazz of Bernstein or Gershwin), and some very progressive rock, with atonalism and chromatism, as well as Adams-style minimalism. Bates stays firmly within the realm of classical lyricism, because his modernity has nothing to do with avant-gardist destruction: rather, it’s a new creation based on existing elements being used in a thoroughly original and personal way. This recording was made at the world première in Santa Fe in summer 2017.

Pianist Jeremy Denk is the closest thing classical music has to a public intellectual in his native U.S., with his booklet notes to this live performance offering an excellent example. Technical and yet personal, they provide a kind of play-by-play to the interpretations offered here, which are quite detailed and yet lively. Although the recording was made before the coronavirus reared its ugly receptors, it was released in 2021, and Denk alludes to the periodic and seemingly random C minor shades in the big C major opening movement of the Piano Concerto No. 25 in C major, K. 503, as suggesting that we now “have to live with uncertainty.” As it happens, details of this kind are where Denk excels. One might disagree with him along the way; the tempo shifts in the finale of the Piano Concerto in D minor, K. 466, push the Mozartian language to its limits, but his ideas are well-formed enough that he tends to sweep the listener along with him. He is aided here by the fact that he is conducting the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra from the keyboard in a performance that is unusually well-integrated between soloist and orchestra. Nonesuch retains some of the enthusiastic applause in its live sound, which is clear. This recording has made classical sales charts in Britain, where the reputation of this unique musician appears to be spreading.
