The Staples’ story goes all the way back to 1915 in Winona, Mississippi, when patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples entered the world. A contemporary and familiar of Charley Patton’s, Roebuck quickly became adept as a solo blues guitarist, entertaining at local dances and picnics. He was also drawn to the church, and by 1937 he was singing and playing guitar with the Golden Trumpets, a spiritual group based out of Drew, Mississippi. Moving to Chicago four years later, he continued playing gospel music with the Windy City’s Trumpet Jubilees. A decade later Pops Staples (as he had become known) presented two of his daughters, Cleotha and Mavis, and his one son, Pervis, in front of a church audience, and the Staple Singers were born. This is a very rare Stereo The Staple Singers What The World Needs Now Is Love! Epic Records 1968 year.

45 years after his first album, Stanley Clarke shows that he is still an untouchable virtuoso on the bass, electric and acoustic guitar, with an artistic vision that is completely his own. Supported by friends as varied as rapper Doug E. Fresh and trumpet player Mark Isham and accompanied by a band featuring Cameron Graves and Beka Gochiashvili on keyboards and Mike Mitchell on drums, the bass ace unfurls all his know-how on this record, whether he’s throwing himself into a torrid funky swerve or revisiting a Bach suite! There’s an impressive eclecticism throughout, though this former member of Return to Forever never ceases to be himself. What’s more, Stanley Clarke doesn’t forget to pay tribute to some recently deceased colleagues: George Duke, Prince, Leon “Ndugu” Chancler, Darryl Brown, Tom Petty, Chuck Berry, Larry Coryell and Al Jarreau.  – Clotilde Maréchal

In a long lifetime that extended from the late Renaissance era through the early Baroque, John Jenkins saw major changes in the development of English chamber music, though many of these were of his own devising. Particularly in the field of consort music, Jenkins was industrious and innovative, reviving the traditional In Nomine and elaborating the form of the fantasy for viol consort, composing them in four, five, and six parts. For this 2019 release on Musica Ficta, Freek Borstlap and his viol consort, The Spirit of Gambo, present the Fantasies in Five Parts, a set of 17 pieces presented in a scheme based on their tonality, rather than in numerical order. Listeners who may not know of Jenkins may find his work similar in mood and style to the later and better-known fantasies of Henry Purcell, who undoubtedly benefitted from Jenkins’ examples as much as from William Lawes’ consort music. The lyrical lines and polished textures of Jenkins’ fantasies were distinct from Lawes’ more assertive and energetic style, and the variety of expressions and range of ideas put his fantasies among the finest English works of the early 17th century. The sound of the recording is quite clear and focused, though the consort’s textures are softened by the resonant acoustics of the Doopsgezinde Kerk in Haarlem.

While essentially a vanity project for composer/producer/arranger Thomas Stewart, backed here by a cadre of “Hot ‘Lanta” session players, The Burning of Atlanta is nevertheless an excellent funk LP that boasts the panoramic scope of a classic blaxploitation soundtrack. With the vocals embedded deep in the mix, the emphasis lies squarely on the record’s intensely hypnotic grooves most of the tracks extend past the five-minute mark, with the epic “Messin’ Around” clocking in at nearly twice that total. Stewart’s dramatic melodies also boast a sheen recalling Curtis Mayfield’s classic Superfly and just in case you couldn’t place the reference, there’s even an answer song: “Freddie’s Alive and Well.”

The Sea And Cake deliver a refreshingly intimate collection of elegantly arranged, singular pop songs. For over two decades and 11 albums, The Sea And Cake have honed a sound all their own, comprised of delicate, intertwining guitar patterns, syncopated rhythms, and airy melodies. Masters of subtlety, their compositions have continually evolved – through minute alterations in texture, unusual approaches to lyrics, and creative production choices. Any Day is testament to The Sea And Cakes artistry, song craft, and utterly unique sound. The results are intimate songs that speak to the searcher in all of us. Through shifting instrumentation and sonic exploration, the band invites you into a world that is both familiar and unexpected. Written and recorded following the departure of bassist Eric Claridge, Any Day is The Sea And Cakes first album recorded as the trio of Sam Prekop, Archer Prewitt, and John McEntire. Since the release of their last album (2012s Runner), the band have, in addition to shows, been creatively very busy: Prekop focusing on solo modular synthesizer and soundtrack work, including an acclaimed collaboration with artist David Hart; McEntires recording and touring with Tortoise, and maintaining a busy schedule as a recording engineer and producer; and Prewitts work as a cartoonist and illustrator, in addition to duo performances with Prekop. The band, still actively performing with bassist Douglas McCombs (Tortoise, Brokeback), were inspired by the challenge of composing as a smaller unit. Any Day captures The Sea And Cakes distinctive aural alchemy, melding longing melancholy with hopeful excitement. In other hands the combination seems impossible, but for The Sea And Cake, its effortless.

While many musical choices are dictated by liturgical necessity, overall, this album is an addition of rare grace and refinement to the living music heritage of the Eastern rites. It will delight the Orthodox and the discerning non-Orthodox music-lover equally, and, perhaps, in its own way, contribute to greater understanding in a fragmented and disjointed world.
