Merle Robert Travis (November 29, 1917 – October 20, 1983) was an American country and western singer, songwriter, and guitarist born in Rosewood, Kentucky, United States. His songs’ lyrics often discussed both the lives and the economic exploitation of American coal miners. Among his many well-known songs and recordings are “Sixteen Tons”, “Re-Enlistment Blues”, “I am a Pilgrim” and “Dark as a Dungeon”. However, it is his unique guitar style, still called “Travis picking” by guitarists, as well as his interpretations of the rich musical traditions of his native Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, for which he is best known today. Travis picking is a syncopated style of guitar fingerpicking rooted in ragtime music in which alternating chords and bass notes are plucked by the thumb while melodies are simultaneously plucked by the index finger. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970 and elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1977.

New music – recorded 2022. Oxley needs no introduction as one of the inventors of this style of playing. He remains active in music some 60 years after he burst onto the scene as one of the finest percussionists the UK has ever produced. For his current music he concentrates on electronic sounds via his manipulation of close mic’d sound objects, with the acoustic percussion element skilfully provided by Holker. A dense weave of detail and texture and a vital new entry point into Oxley’s continuing body of work.

All four compositions of Ørenslyd are developed from an exploration of acoustic and vocal sound formation and the active participation of our listening ability in this formation. The four pieces represent different manifestations of the tonal expression of the human voice and the acoustic richness of the double bass. Ørenslyd (from “øre”, ear, and “lyd”, sound) means “the opportunity to hear something being said or to be heard yourself”.

The Swiss composer Émile Jaques-Dalcroze (1865–1950) is best remembered for his development of Eurhythmics, which teaches the appreciation of music through movement. This first-ever complete recording of all his German-language Lieder – setting folksongs as well as more recent Romantic poetry – shows him bridging both French and German traditions with a style somewhere between Fauré and Brahms. Written early in Jaques- Dalcroze’s career, these songs span a wide range of emotions, from innocent rural idylls to the contemplation of existential pain and heartache.

Debussy may have stipulated ‘mains formidables’ as the requirement for pianists tackling his Études, but they need a lot more besides. It’s clear from these magisterial performances that Steven Osborne’s ‘formidable hands’ are always at the service of a profound musical intelligence.

The lyrics of the songs are in Romanes and Russian, and tell of sorrow, pain, poverty and suffering, but also love and passion.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 01:43:17 minutes | 3,86 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Craft Recordings

Includes all recordings from the ‘Full House Sessions’ at the Tsubo in Berkeley on June 25, 1962 and two previously unreleased performances.

Wes Montgomery’s incredibly original concept and style continue to have a profound influence on virtually all jazz guitarists of his era and beyond, as well as a host of rock musicians.

Montgomery, known for his unusual technique of plucking the strings with the side of his thumb and his extensive use of octaves, played in Lionel Hampton’s band in the 1948s and 1950s and with brothers Buddy and Monk.

Beginning in 1964, a series of recordings with string orchestra and big band accompaniment became bestsellers, but Wes was rarely recorded in his prime.

He rarely performed in clubs, and it was often said that his club performances exuded more warmth and excitement than his studio work.

This album is the only “live” album he left on his first label, Riverside, and features tenor sax virtuoso Johnny Griffin, with whom Montgomery was Miles Davis’ partner at the time.

A memorable session where Montgomery first joined the celebrated trio of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, who formed Miles Davis’ rhythm section at the time.

New notes by journalist Bill Milkowski.

Poems, the collaborative debut DG album from Icelandic composer, conductor and producer Viktor Orri Arnason, released worldwide on 10 November 2023. The album was conceived and co-written with soprano and visual artist Alfheidur Erla Gudmundsdóttir. Its ten exquisite tracks draw on the pair’s shared cultural heritage, setting poems by Icelandic poets past and present, including lyrics by Arnason and Gudmundsdóttir themselves. Viktor adds piano accompaniment to Alfheidur’s hushed, floating vocals throughout, at times playing violin and viola as well, with some tracks featuring additional strings (members of the Reykjavík Orkestra) and/or subtle electronic elements. Drawn to poetry that speaks of vulnerability and solitude, change and renewal, the beauty of the natural world, and the power of words to express our dreams and innermost selves, they were also inspired to write their own poems, each contributing one new text to the album. Arnason hopes Poems will encourage listeners to be mindful: ‘Poems is in many ways about the joys and struggles in life and how being present can help you through’.

Singer Stacey Kent brings a new album, which will be released through the label Naïve.

Stacey says, “This is the first time I’ve recorded a song twice on the same album. “If You Go Away” came into my repertoire in 2018 when Jim wrote an orchestral arrangement for a concert in Paris. From time to time, I also sang Jacques Brel’s original, “Ne me quitte pas.” But regardless of the language, someone always asked me why I didn’t sing it in the other language. Some singers then added both languages to the same version. Since both lyrics are beautiful in their own right and equally deserve to be recorded, I decided to record them both.
