It’s a pleasure to introduce one of the brightest members of the Windham Hill label, Michael Hedges. “Aerial Boundaries” is the most important works of this curious guitarist. I say curious about this strange way of playing the guitar, with a good friend called this way of playing as “percussive guitar” (for those strums and blows the lid, and use the guitar like a piano). In a clean technique in implementation, apart from playing a strange guitar called “harp guitar”. The album is very even with well-known pieces from his repertoire (the album that should be a fan of Hedges). A few days ago, reviewing Youtube submissions of this guitar player, I found that has a string of clones … but Hedges, is one.
Ah! and on top, is a great singer.

From the Boston folk scene, emerged John Parker Compton’s band of Appaloosa, from which would also come Earth Opera (and its continuity Sea Train) and James Taylor. JPC (vocals & ac guitars) had formed an experimental duo with David Batteau and his cello that played a few gigs around Boston and Cambridge as they were still teenagers. The duo evolved with David’s brother Robin taking over with his violin, before expanding to a quartet with the arrival of Eugene Rosov (cello) and David Reiser (electric bass) and opened for Tim Harding and played every Sunday afternoon at the Cambridge Common Music Concerts. Rosov and Batteau were Harvard students, while Reiser sat in with prominent jazzmen in Boston clubs.
The group popped down to NY to get an audition with the legendary Al Kooper, playing directly in his office and getting instantly a recording deal. The prominent Kooper (producer and musician with The Blues Project, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bloomfield and by then a solo artiste as well and too many sessions to list) was to produce their sole album.
This album was labelled as folk baroque (as was popular at the time), a term also applying to Donovan, Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Rush, Nick Drake, Bobbie Gentry, Tim Buckley, Phil Ochs, the Bee Gees, and Tim Hardin, and meant folk mixed with classical/symphonic music. Sadly the album got almost no notice, staying four weeks in the US billboard, peaking at 128, as these folk baroque albums were flooding the airwaves at the time. It would be Appaloosa’s only album, the band splitting up when Compton, Batteau, and some friends drove out to California. John and Robin worked as a duo on Columbia for the Compton & Batteau in California album, with John doing his first solo album shortly afterward. To this day JPC is still active in the folk circles and reformed the group in 05, but nothing yet has come out of that.

Santana Greatest Hits: Live at Montreux (2011) Blu-ray 1080i AVC DTS-HD MA 5.1

Santana Greatest Hits: Live at Montreux 2011 is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Eagle Rock Entertainment with an AVC encoded 1080i transfer in 1.78:1. These Montreux concerts typically look very sharp on Blu-ray, at least those from the last couple of years or so, and this Santana outing is no exception. Aside from some very minor posterizing which crops up due to some incredibly robust red and blue lighting, which bathes the entire stage in overwrought hues, this is a very sharp and appealing looking high definition presentation which pops especially well in the many close-ups which capture Carlos and his incredible band in a very up close and personal way. Fine detail is exceptional in these close-ups, so much so that you can virtually count the freckles on Cindy Blackman Santana’s face during her guest appearance on a couple of numbers. Midrange and far range shots are a tad murky by comparison, and some of the extremely wide angle shots which capture the entire huge audience are hampered by a lack of shadow detail in the backgrounds if not outright crush.

The latest in MDG’s fine series of live recordings by Stefan Blunier and the Beethoven Orchestra of Bonn is an intelligently chosen programme of three of Respighi’s orchestral works that illustrate the many and varied aspects of this master orchestrator’s compositions as well as his homage to music of the past. It is also pleasing to see two of the works making their first appearance on SACD.
The delicate ‘Trittico Botticelliano’ of 1927 was conceived while the composer and his wife were touring the United States and is representative of his interest in, and study of, the Renaissance and Baroque music of his native country. Respighi chose to depict both the atmosphere and spirit of three of the most celebrated of Botticelli’s paintings, ‘Spring (La Primavera)’, ‘The Adoration of the Magi’ and ‘The Birth of Venus’ using small orchestral forces. Each of these three tiny tone poems is exquisitely scored, and thanks to Blunier’s relaxed tempi, the players of his cultivated Bonn orchestra have time to relish each of the individual solo opportunities provided. The sound is both diaphanous and crystal clear.
Like many 20th century composers Respighi made arrangements of the music of earlier masters, and the ‘Tre Corali’ is one such example. His arrangement for orchestra of three of Bach’s most well-known organ chorales may be anachronistic, but few could fail to marvel at Respighi’s imaginative scoring and respectful treatment of them. The three chorales are ‘Nun komm der Heiden Heiland’, ‘Meine Seele erhebt den Herren’ and ‘Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme’. The manner in which the luxurious and glowing string sound has been captured on this recording is particularly arresting.
The final work on this SACD is the much-recorded ‘Pini di Roma’, the second part of the so-called ‘Roman Trilogy’ and a piece beloved of many audiophiles. Blunier is not a conductor who rushes his fences and his tempi in all but the first section of the work are slightly more measured than is often the case, but are nevertheless quite convincing. The first part of ‘The Pines near a Catacomb’ is wonderfully atmospheric as is the balancing of the distant trumpet and nightingale song in the section that follows. Unfortunately the total absence of deep organ pedal notes at any point comes as a major disappointment. Blunier’s steady pace does pay dividends as the army of the Consul traverses the Appian Way accompanied, on this recording, by exceptionally thunderous drums. It is, however, a pity that the use of the surround channels for the extra brass is a mite cautious and consequently the work’s final bars fail to make the impact found on the recent thrilling Neschling recording Respighi: Roman Trilogy – Neschling. An enjoyable performance then, but not a first choice for this work in an increasingly crowded field.
MDG’s 5.1 recording is of high quality, possessing a wide dynamic range, an excellent sense of depth and tonal veracity, but it is important to stress that this disc does need to be played at a high volume setting or the sound can seem somewhat lacking in presence. Though these are live recordings, extraneous noise is minimal and there is no applause.
Not withstanding the reservations outlined above, this is a most enjoyable SACD. SA-CD.net

This might be a single disc, but it is really two different recordings, in two different halls, at two different times, of two distinct musical forms.
In the above, WoO numbers refer to the German acronym WoO (Werk ohne Opuszahl) meaning a ‘work without an opus number’ as given in the Kinsky-Halm catalogue. Hess numbers refer to additional works listed in the catalogue by Willy Hess that are not in the Kinsky-Halm catalogue.
The Sony SACD piano sound has a lovely zingy bass, and yet a softer ‘distant’ quality. Stadtfeld has a light delicate touch where appropriate, and equally some uber sturm und drang when needed, as in the absolutely magnificent Prelude in F minor WoO 51. There is, however, some slight unevenness in Stadtfeld’s ornamentation in the Rondo, which suggests that slower tempi might be appropriate. Indeed, I think his Rondo No.1 is too rushed by any measure, to the extent that musical virtue is lost. In this regard, I distinctly prefer the version with the American pianist Russell Sherman on Redbook CD (6min10sec vs 4min53sec for Stadtfeld). The Allegretto, the fabulous Prelude and the Adagio are all splendid. On balance, the solo repertoire is a very fine recording of unusual early Beethoven repertoire, and comes highly recommended.
… My inclination: enjoy the disc the way it should have been correctly conceived … as an excellent solo album by a very talented pianist … and just ignore the rest.

Ray Of Light, Madonna’s first studio album in four years, marked the singer’s return to pop music after a detour that took her from Argentina to motherhood to spiritual reawakening. After reuniting with longtime songwriting partner Patrick Leonard (who played a key role in many of Madonna’s greatest songs and whose contributions to this, her eighth album, are often overlooked), Madonna called on U.K. electronica whiz William Orbit to assemble a batch of songs that nimbly married electronic music with pop. With “Frozen,” the album’s first single, Madonna, Leonard and Orbit crafted what can only be described as one of the great pop masterpieces of the ’90s. Its lyrics are uncomplicated but its statement is grand: “You only see what your eyes want to see/How can life be what you want it to be?” The song’s bewitching melody and cinematic string arrangement is pumped up with Orbit’s expressive drum fills and pulsating electronic effects. Tracks like the frenetic “Skin” and “Shanti/Ashtangi,” a Yoga techno prayer only Madonna could pull off, are similarly lacquered with a bubbly electronic sheen. But for all the studio gimmicks, there’s a healthy spoonful of live guitars and percussion thrown into the mix. Orbit’s cycles of analog synths and electric guitar licks perfectly supplement the elasticity of Madonna’s then-newly-trained vocal chords. Like no other Madonna hit in recent memory, the title track found the singer in a celebratory tech-frenzy. Whether it was an epiphany of the spiritual or sonic kind (Ray Of Light marked a dance-rooted homecoming for the pop star), her elation was unmistakable: “Quicker than a ray of light, I’m flying…And I feel like I just got home!” Though she’s made an entire career out of revealing herself, Madonna hadn’t been this emotionally candid since Like A Prayer. Layered with vocal samples and buoyant drum n’ bass beats, “Drowned World,” the title of which was inspired by J. G. Ballard’s apocalyptic novel of the same name, sums up much of Madonna’s personal tribulations with fame: “I got exactly what I asked for/Running, rushing back for more…And now I find, I’ve changed my mind.” “Mer Girl,” the album’s final, spooky offering, is a surreal meditation on mortality and the death of the newly-dubbed Ethereal Girl’s mother: “The earth took me in her arms/Leaves covered my face/Ants marched across my back.” But while time has yet to leave its mark on Ray Of Light the way it has True Blue and Erotica, it’s difficult to tell how the album will hold up in years to come.
