Not so surprising to learn that Beth Hart is taking on the Led Zeppelin monument in an entire album, after shielding her concerts so much with covers of Whole Lotta Love. Slash had even joined him in 2010. Rare are those who can rub themselves into Robert Plant’s voice without looking pale. But the Californian is far from being one of them and Rob Cavallo understood it very quickly when he heard him improvising on Led Zep, during recording sessions for his latest album War In My Mind (2019). The American producer at the head of Warner already had the idea of an album, driven by sound engineer Doug McKean with handpicked musicians: Tim Pierce on guitar (Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner), Chris Chaney (Rob Zombie, Slash) on bass, Jamie Muhoberac (Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones) on keyboards and drummer Dorian Crozier (Celine Dion, Joe Cocker). This tribute therefore begins very strongly with Beth’s favorite, Whole Lotta Love, on which she excels, then aligns the blockbusters of the Page and Plant repertoire: Kashmir, Stairway To Heaven, Black Dog … If the flashy and massive orchestration signed Dave Campbell can leave more than one on the tile – the purists first –, this tribute proves that Beth Hart, who finds in the airship blues the perfect ground of expression for her hoarse and powerful voice, at the crossroads of a Janis Joplin and of an Aretha Franklin, remains far too underestimated.

Of the major ’60s soul stars, Wilson Pickett was one of the roughest and sweatiest, working up some of the decade’s hottest dancefloor grooves on hits. Although he tends to be held in somewhat lower esteem than more versatile talents like Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin, he is often a preferred alternative of fans who like their soul on the rawer side. He also did a good deal to establish the sound of Southern soul with his early hits, which were often written and recorded with the cream of the session musicians in Memphis and Muscle Shoals.

Will Downing – Black Pearls (2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

The source material for the inspired, all-covers Black Pearls album was popularized strictly by women. It’s an unsurprising concept, given that Will Downing made his 1987 solo debut with a version of Deniece Williams’ “Free” and went on to cover classics by Rose Royce and Aretha Franklin. The singer’s first album for the Shanachie label, this features updates of well-known songs, mostly ballads, that originated in the late ’70s and the early ’90s. The likes of Jean Carn’s “Don’t Let It Go to Your Head,” Williams’ “Black Butterfly,” René & Angela’s “Your Smile,” and Brenda Russell’s “Get Here” — easily the biggest crossover hit among the selections — are reinterpreted faithfully with Downing’s typical richness and restraint. Phyllis Hyman’s “Meet Me on the Moon” (1991), co-written by Gene McDaniels, is the deepest selection, but even that one is far from obscure, and it’s evidently as close to Downing’s heart as anything else. A characteristically polished recording produced by Downing, it involves discerning use of strings and horns, as well as help from some longtime associates. Wife Audrey Wheeler Downing on background vocals, Melvin Davis on bass, and Randy Bowland on guitar are all along for the trip. Kirk Whalum’s flute augments “Nights Over Egypt,” and Najee takes a saxophone solo on “Street Life.” ~ Andy Kellman

Departing from the Steve Miller Band after a two-album stint, Boz Scaggs found himself on his own but not without support. Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner, his friend, helped him sign with Atlantic Records and the label had him set up shop in Muscle Shoals, recording his debut album with that legendary set of studio musicians, known for their down-and-dirty backing work for Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett, among many other Southern soul legends. The Muscle Shoals rhythm section, occasionally augmented by guitarist Duane Allman, gives this music genuine grit, but this isn’t necessarily a straight-up blue-eyed soul record, even if the opening “I’m Easy” and “I’ll Be Long Gone” are certainly as deeply soulful as anything cut at Muscle Shoals. Even at this early stage Scaggs wasn’t content to stay in one place, and he crafted a kind of Americana fantasia here, also dabbling in country and blues along with the soul and R&B that grounds this record. If the country shuffle “Now You’re Gone” sounds just slightly a shade bit too vaudeville for its own good, it only stands out because the rest of the record is pitch-perfect, from the Jimmie Rodgers cover “Waiting for a Train” and the folky “Look What I Got!” to the extended 11-minute blues workout “Loan Me a Dime,” which functions as much as a showcase for a blazing Duane Allman as it does for Boz. But even with that show-stealing turn, and even with the Muscle Shoals musicians giving this album its muscle and part of its soul, this album is still thoroughly a showcase for Boz Scaggs’ musical vision, which even at this stage is wide and deep. It would grow smoother and more assured over the years, but the slight bit of raggedness suits the funky, down-home performances and helps make this not only a great debut, but also an enduring blue-eyed soul masterpiece.

Yola – Walk Through Fire (Deluxe Edition) (2019) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

British rising star Yola’s debut solo album, Walk Through Fire, is produced by The Black Keys’ eight-time Grammy Award winner Dan Auerbach. Yola has blazed her own trail with an unshakable passion for the soul and country music she loves. Walk Through Fire is a contemporary twist on a traditional sonic tapestry of orchestral strings, fiddle, steel and shimmering tremolo guitars, it provides the perfect soundtrack to Yola’s arresting vocals, which first came to the attention of Auerbach after a friend sent him a video of Yola performing in Nashville. Yola’s video (directed by Reid Long) for her debut song ‘Ride Out In The Country’ is the first taste of the forthcoming record. Dan Auerbach stated, “The moment I met Yola I was impressed. Her spirit fills the room, just like her voice… she has the ability to sing in a full roar or barely a whisper and that is a true gift. She made everyone in the studio an instant believer.” Yola said, “Lyrically the song is about escapism and the video adds an awesome twist. We wrote the song about getting away from an oppressive environment. I was in an abusive relationship a while back, so I drew on the feeling of relief and release that I had when I truly felt free.” Hailing from a small town outside Bristol, Yola grew up in poverty with an unsupportive parent who “banned” her from making any music. She later became homeless, living on the streets of London and also experienced stress-induced voice loss. Yola overcame these challenges to launch a successful sideline in writing, performing on pop hits and briefly joined Massive Attack. She was also the main writer and front woman in Phantom Limb, opening for artists including James Brown and Dr. John before pursuing her solo career in 2016. She quickly made her mark in the US with her vocal powers and innovative songwriting winning early supporters, including Rolling Stone, the Wall Street Journal, Paste, Stereogum, NPR and The Current’s Bill DeVille who exclaimed, “She’s a powerhouse of a singer: she’s part Southern soul, she’s part gospel and she’s completely amazing. You’ll want to remember her name: Yola.” Written and recorded at Auerbach’s Nashville studio, Easy Eye Sound, Walk Through Fire is a truly collaborative record. It was written in the studio by Yola and Auerbach with contributions from songwriting legends who between them have written songs for artists from Glen Campbell to Aretha Franklin. Auerbach also assembled his Easy Eye Sound all-star house band composed of legendary session players. Musicians who performed on the record include bassist Dave Roe (Johnny Cash) as well as drummer Gene Chrisman and pianist Bobby Wood who played on hits by Dusty Springfield and Elvis Presley. Guest performers include up-and-comer Molly Tuttle and country music icon Vince Gill. Yola’s debut album Walk Through Fire is the latest release on Dan Auerbach’s record label, Easy Eye Sound, distributed by his longtime label Nonesuch Records.

Sometimes the longer the journey toward self-discovery, the bigger the payoff. Raised in Bristol, England, Yola Carter’s been homeless, sung in front of 60,000 at Glastonbury with Massive Attack and written hits for Will Young and Chase & Status. And yet she couldn’t quite find the right setting for her voice and a musical match for her heart until now. Influenced by Otis Redding, Dolly Parton and Aretha Franklin, Yola eventually gravitated towards country soul, that rarified Americana fusion that mixes organs with pedal steel guitar and Memphis soul grit and Nashville fiddles with the passions of gospel. Sensing opportune timing, The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, a master at mixing 60s retro elements into a modern brand of rootsy pop music, brought her to Nashville to write and record her debut album with veteran sidemen like pianist Bobby Wood and drummer Gene Chrisman, both members of American Sound Studio’s house band The Memphis Boys.  To cinch success, Yola co-wrote the simmering title track with Dan Penn (“I’m Your Puppet,” “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man”). At the center of it all is Yola’s dramatic, emotive voice; it’s a little reminiscent of Dusty Springfield and a perfect match for Roy Orbison-styled tales of lost love. The alchemy of her mighty vocals and Auerbach’s retro stylings shines brightest in “Lonely the Night,” a mashup of quavering Spector-esque Wall of Sound and smooth countrypolitan gloss seasoned with a glockenspiel and an irresistible hook in the chorus. That’s followed by the bouncy soul pop of “Still Gone,” and the album’s knockout ballad, “Keep Me Here,” where she duets to perfection with the high tenor of the incomparable Vince Gill. Few debut albums grab and sustain an awesome sense of discovery with as much style as Walk Through Fire.  – Robert Baird

For people who witnessed Avril Lavigne’s entrance into the music world with 2002’s Let Go, it might be surprising to hear that Avril Lavigne, in 2019, listens to jazz and soul music all day every day: Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, and Frank Sinatra, to name a few. Those interests have spilled over into the 34-year-old musician’s latest record, Head Above Water. “I get a little jazzy on the album,” she tells EW. “I needed to evolve musically and not do the same pop-rock thing over and over again.”

Water is also a departure from Lavigne’s 2013 self-titled work, trading in guitar and live drums for a more stripped-down, less pop-oriented experience. While there are exceptions — the power ballad “Head Above Water” and the playful, empowerment anthem “Dumb Blonde” — Lavigne instead offers a resilient project crafted around her vocals.

Allan Harris is the outstanding and internationally renowned vocalist, guitarist and composer. With his gruff, gravelly voice, his penchant for hep cat diction, and the serpentine bebop turns of his vocalese creations, the late Eddie Jefferson might not seem the ideal match for a classic romantic crooner like Allan Harris. The Brooklyn-born singer has previously paid homage to the songs of Billy Strayhorn and Nat King Cole, repertoire that seems like a more ideal fit. “The Genius of Eddie Jefferson” is an ideal blend of Harris’ rich, beguiling baritone and Jefferson’s bantering cool. The album follows Harris into adventurous new territory, at once embracing the challenge and making these bop classics as embracing and celebratory as his takes on jazz standards and swooning ballads. The album features alto saxophonist and long-time Eddie Jefferson partner, Richie Cole.
