When the Berliner “Funk-Stunde” (“Radio Hour”) went out on the air on October 29, 1923, heralding the start of German radio, the first piece of music to be broadcast live was Fritz Kreisler’s Andantino in the Style of Martini. The fact that the era of the new mass medium began with an imitation of an old musical style is not without a certain irony – and reveals how little attention had been paid to the problem of music on the radio. It was indeed to be a further five years before the radio stations commissioned the first compositions for the medium. Here, under the heading of “generic radio music”, the following genres were defined: “radio suite, musical radio play, radio cantata, radio opera and symphonic light music”. Modern composers such as Paul Hindemith, Ernst Toch and Kurt Weill were all commissioned, along with light entertainment composers such as Edmund Nick, Mischa Spoliansky and Eduard Künneke.

The 325-voice Mormon Tabernacle Choir of Salt Lake is one of the best-known, best-loved musical organizations in the world. Here they perform superb new arrangements, by Associate Conductors Mack Wilberg and Barlow Bradford, of sixteen favorite carols, accompanied by the newly-formed Orchestra at Temple Square (heard here in their second recording ever), and conducted by the talented new Director of the Choir, Dr. Craig Jessop.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has been referred to as “America’s Choir,” (Ronald Reagan), “a national treasure” (George Bush), and “the world’s greatest choir” (Eugene Ormandy). The 325 choir members participate without pay as a service to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which sponsors the Choir. Year in and year out, these dedicated singers come at least twice a week to the Tabernacle for their regular Thursday evening rehearsals and Sunday morning broadcasts. Added to this, special concerts, concert tours, recordings, and other activities necessitate these volunteers to report for duty an average of 150 times a year.

Having toured the world with MCZO and been at the helm of his own studio Pamoja Records since he was just 18, influential singeli producer Duke, now 26, is one of Tanzania’s busiest club alchemists. On his acclaimed solo debut “Uingizaji Hewa” we were introduced to his idiosyncratic “hip-hop singeli” sound, a slower cousin to the Dar es Salaam-rooted hard ‘n fast club template that takes as much special sauce from Busta Rhymes and Eminem as it does the 200bpm clatter of genre veterans Jay Mitta and Sisso.

Winner of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association’s Ostwald Award for composition, Peter Graham is one of the leading brass band composers of his generation. Graham’s previous Naxos album with the Black Dyke Band, Metropolis 1927 (8.573968), received widespread acclaim from the brass band press. The five world premiere recordings heard on this album represent his long association with Black Dyke. The trumpet concerto Master of Suspense references Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic movies, the virtuoso euphonium concerto Force of Nature was inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s extraordinary life, and The Triumph of Time is a dazzling example of compositional craft and brass band virtuosity. The Black Dyke Band is legendary in brass band circles, and for Naxos has already recorded the music of Philip Wilby (8.572166), considered ‘dazzling’ by the American Record Guide. We also had great success with their Symphonic Brass album (8.570726), also conducted by Nicholas Childs, which remained in the Classical Top 20 for 18 weeks and was a MusicWeb International ‘Recording of the Month’.

William Eggleston is a famed photographer and musician credited for iconic album covers such as Spoon’s Transference and Jimmy Eat World’s Bleed American. 512 was inspired and recorded at the Parkview Apartments in Memphis, Tennessee where Eggleston lived for almost ten years. The apartment was full of art and inspiration: cameras, naturally, but also high-end stereo tube amplifiers and objects that you’d rush towards money in hand at your local flea market. But also a gigantic nine foot Bosendorfer grand piano and a massive grand vintage JBL theater speaker console. His home was overwhelmed by music. By recording there the album captures not just his performances, but also the vibe of the place; it often felt as though there were artists lurking in the aether listening along. His visitors over the years were no small change: Lee Friedlander, Carl Sagan, Dennis Hopper, Paul McCartney and many others came to see him and listen to his hypnotic “Musik”. You can hear local traffic, a dog barking, weather; reality, in other words. But there was another space layered on top, a kind of surreality echoing his music, as you can imagine a gathering of musicians listening in, eager to join him. Thus came along 512 which features the legendary Brian Eno on bells and production from Leo Abrahams (Regina Spektor, Paul Simon, Jon Hopkins).”

Surprisingly (and temporarily) employed by Mitch Miller at the major label Columbia Records, Lee Wiley followed up the stunning Night in Manhattan with two further 10″ LPs recorded in the late fall of 1951 and released simultaneously in 1952, discs that took off from her celebrated songbook albums for the Liberty Music Shop label back in 1939-40. At that time, she had devoted collections to George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, and Harold Arlen. Now, she addressed Vincent Youmans and Irving Berlin. Unlike Night in Manhattan, which featured Bobby Hackett, Joe Bushkin, and a string section for accompaniment (and unlike the Liberty Music Shop albums that featured a small jazz band), the Youmans and Berlin LPs used a double-piano backup from Stan Freeman and Cy Walter. For the Berlin album, Wiley made sometimes surprising choices of eight compositions from the songwriter’s vast catalog, ranging from 1922’s non-production song “Some Sunny Day” to 1946’s “I Got Lost in His Arms,” from Annie Get Your Gun. Among the unsurprising inclusions were two tunes associated with a major Wiley influence, Ethel Waters, who introduced both “Heat Wave” and “Supper Time” in 1933’s As Thousands Cheer. And Wiley equaled Waters’ versatility on the contrasting tones of those two very different songs. Less expected were relative obscurities like the sprightly “Some Sunny Day” and “How Many Times,” while “Fools Fall in Love,” a 1940 composition from Louisiana Purchase, was almost completely forgotten a decade later. The selections made for an album of varying moods on which Wiley worked well with the pianists, who were given plenty of room and used it to emphasize the 1920s feel of Berlin’s tunes (even when they dated from the 1930s and ’40s). The collection was hardly a definitive portrait of the songwriter, but it did give a sense of the breadth of his talent, as well as that of the singer.

GLI ERRAGLI CHE FAI, an unpublished song written specifically for the theme song of the docu-series IL SUPERVISSUTO where for the first time Vasco tells himself in the first person: he talks about himself, about his extraordinary reckless and supervised life. A 5-hour long selfie, this is how Vasco defined his version of events: an honest and sincere story, between public and private, his artistic career and his life path, from the beginning to today. In the story, much space is given to music, his songs, immortal, follow step by step his life. The occasion therefore made the song GLI ERRAGLI CHE FAI, in perfect harmony with the intro and retrospective journey, and from the song to the soundtrack the step was short: taken and inspired by the series Netfli om omomina, this OST contains 32 songs.

Recorded at her long-time Tennessee home, the album captures the unvarnished essence of southern storytelling and the authentic roots of Americana music.

Once again, Wolfgang Brunner and his Salzburg Hofmusik have unearthed a music-dramatic work by Michael Haydn: the Singspiel “Die Ährenleserin” was written in 1778 for the Benedictine monastery theater of Kremsmünster, based on a libretto by the librettist Christian Felix Weiße. The story is simple and touching: Emilie is picking up ears of corn from the ground and is accosted by Krums, the overseer of Herr Mildenau, who accuses her of stealing grain. Mr. Mildenau’s two children, Franz and Henriette, come along and take the poor girl Emilie’s side: she has an honest and noble face. Herr von Mildenau joins them, and in conversation with Emilie it turns out that she is the daughter of his best friend, who had been killed in the war, and that he can finally, now vicariously, make amends to her. He takes Emilie and her mother into his home. Michael Haydn’s commissioned composition “Ninfe inbelli”, also written for an Upper Austrian Benedictine monastery, is of a completely different character and high compositional stature. On January 19, 1765, Princess Josepha of Bavaria stayed overnight at Lambach Abbey on her way from Munich to Vienna and was honored with a cantata of homage. Most likely Maria Magdalena Lipp, Haydn’s later wife, who had been hired as a Salzburg court singer only a few days before, took over the highly virtuosic solo part of the cantata.

There is something both universal and essentially human about Bach’s cello suites. In spite of the similarities in their form and style, they have individual peculiarities and “personality”. It is easy to see patterns, but the music also provides wonderful opportunities for variations. Bach often has surprises up his sleeve, new perspectives that make the suites many-faceted, just like life itself.
