The 20 th century was indeed a very fascinating time. Musically, this century offered an incomparable variety of movements. From post-romanticism, neo-classicism, im pres sionism, jazz to the most diverse developments in the field of atonal and serial music, at the same time, people were composing in a vast variety of styles. Therefore, it is difficult to assign a single style to a composer, especially since the boundaries between them were very fluid and influences from the most diverse fields can be recognized in the works of many composers. In Arthur Honegger’s case, the French influences are unmistakable. Honegger, who grew up in Zurich, spent a large part of his life in France. He there was a member of the Groupe des Six, a group of six composers, whose members included Darius Milhaud and Francis Poulenc. Their common interest lay in contemporary forms of light music, which is reflected in Honegger’s piano works as he did not tend to write large, hard-to-digest compositions. Instead, his piano works are defined by smaller character pieces, which, in a rather modern language, always contain a hint of French lightness and elegance. Moreover, Honegger turned out to be an extremely ingenious melodist. He had the gift of composing charming little melodies that remained in your ears for the rest of the day. Listen, for example, to the fourth piece from the Sept pièces brèves. Simply delightful, isn’t it?

Some musical works open themselves up immediately. You listen once and know what you have. And then there are those that arouse your curiosity, want to be heard again and again until they reveal more and more of themselves from the depth of their own center, in order to manifest their overwhelming complexity in the end. Jürgen Friedrich’s large-scale program Semi Song, recorded by his Large Ensemble, belongs to the latter.

Charles Owen & Katya Apekisheva – Poulenc, Debussy & Milhaud: Works for 2 Pianos (2023)

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Orchid Classics
Charles Owen and Katya Apekisheva perform a stunning selection of French 20th-century music for piano four hands. Both Milhaud and Poulenc were members of Les Six, a band of composers who specialised in producing colourful, quirky and highly original scores. Milhaud’s Scaramouche epitomises the wit and joie de vivre of this approach and has become one of his most popular works – although at the time the composer nearly forbade its publication. Poulenc combined grace and sparkling humour with a nobility that reflected his desire for a ‘return to simplicity’. His Élégie was written ‘as if improvising with a cigar in your mouth and a glass of cognac on the table’, while the Sonata for Four Hands is full of finger-crossing intricacies, and at the heart of the Sonata for Two Pianos is an Andantino described by the composer as ‘a lyrical, profound outburst… It is piano without pretence, real piano where each instrument converses with the other in perfect understanding and without interrupting.’ Debussy’s evocative Nocturnes arranged by Ravel conclude the release.

Jewel – Picking Up The Pieces (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 01:02:35 minutes | 733 MB | Genre: Folk

Picking Up the Pieces is Jewel’s 14-track LP through Sugar Hill Records. She self-produced the record – with her first producer, the late Ben Keith, always in mind – and hired a band comprised mostly of Neil Young collaborators to help her strip away the veneer she’d built up over two decades in the music business.
“This is just me. These are my thoughts. These are my feelings. This is my poetry,” Jewel said. “It really felt like returning to a part of me that I didn’t mean to lose, but with time and relationships and life and surviving and dealing, you take on new things and not all of them are great.”
The last five years have been full of change, both personal and creative, for the 41-year-old Alaska-born singer. Her 4-year-old son Kase was born, but her marriage fell apart. She wrote her memoir, Never Broken, and recorded a pair of children’s albums. Picking Up the Pieces captures some of these moments on “Love Used to Be” and “Mercy,” but also gathers longtime unrecorded live favorites like “Carnivore” and “Boy Needs a Bike.” The album also includes “My Father’s Daughter,” a stunning autobiographical collaboration with Dolly Parton.
“I was trying to keep my mind quiet and honestly get back to something I feel like I’d lost touch with in my life. It was really an exercise in shutting out fear. I was giving myself permission to be exactly who and what I was.”

There is something special about this moment in time. As the world continues to burn and crumble around us, I am in awe of watching people whom I know, old and new, create music and art that speaks of love, loss, giving, and grief. Across Water represents much more than a few compositions split between two of this generation’s greatest thinkers, but four big hugs from members of my own family.
