It is often said that the string quartet is the “supreme discipline of chamber music”. And indeed, the four-part movement of equal voices was and is a challenge. For Beethoven, for Brahms and also for Widmann. All three composers are represented in the program of this production.

It took some time before each of them went public with their first contribution to the genre. After all, there were great, respect-inspiring role models in the background. For Beethoven, Haydn and Mozart were the benchmark, Brahms had to work his way up to the “giant” Beethoven – and Jörg Widmann can look back on a rich tradition spanning far more than two centuries.

With its debut CD on KALEIDOS, the multi-award-winning Malion Quartet presents “first string quartets” by these composers from the classical, romantic and modern periods.

Astor Piazzolla’s “Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” reimagines Vivaldi’s masterpiece, “The Four Seasons,” within the context of the Argentine tango. Originally written as four separate pieces between 1965 and 1970, Piazzolla’s interpretation infuses Vivaldi’s Baroque elegance with the passionate and rhythmic essence of tango, creating a fusion of classical and contemporary musical styles. Each season, represented by a separate movement, vividly captures the changing moods and dynamics of Buenos Aires throughout the year. Piazzolla’s “Four Seasons” is a testament to his extraordinary talent for pushing the boundaries of traditional tango music and creating a modern, evocative work that remains a cherished gem in the world of classical and tango music.

What does hell look like? The introduction of Toy Machine skateboard’s seminal 1996 video “Welcome To Hell,” with its pulsing overlay of the Stars and Stripes on top footage of police officers, businessmen, and fast food service workers, would appear to paint hell as the mirage of American exceptionalism. A thick, centuries-spanning unreality that may not outwardly trade in fire and brimstone, but if you turn your nose to the wind, you’ll smell sulphur.

French pianist and composer Jean Kapsa shares a beautiful mini-album, ‘Syncline’, out on all digital platforms via LEITER. A collection of six solo pieces, it was recorded at night between September and November 2022 in Kapsa’s home in Paris on the piano his parents gave him when he was just 15 and which he still keeps in his living room, surrounded permanently by microphones. “Most of it consists of first or second takes,” he says, “usually recorded not too long after a piece’s composition – and often on the same day – so that the mood was the same. If I wasn’t happy after three takes, I usually gave up. I wanted the listener to be able to witness this intimate, fragile way of building an album made up of very new, personal, precious pieces.”

After decades on the road as one of rock’s most in-demand sidemen, touring with the likes of Jackson Browne, John McLaughlin, The Blind Boys of Alabama and others, multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby began a relationship with Nashville’s Blue Rose label as a solo artist, releasing Cryptologic in 2017. For his follow up, Crosby wanted to pay tribute to all of the artists who’d hired him over the years — artists who’d been a part of his life experience. The result is Gilder, an album of piano instrumentals. “I would first pick an artist friend that I’d played with, think about all of their songs and find one that was suited for solo piano. It’s my way of celebrating everyone that I’ve played with and admire.” Recorded both at Dave Schools’ Sebastopol studio, Spacecamp, and Grammy-winning producer Dave Way’s Waystation in Los Angeles, Gilder’s 11 solo piano tracks find Crosby covering artists he’s worked with ranging from Mahavishnu Orchestra to Father John Misty, and from James Taylor to Jenny Lewis. The songs shine as a cohesive collection, with Crosby’s understated, refined keyboard work bringing a new dimension and mood to these artists’ songs.

A.MA Records’ exploration of the Serbian Wave of contemporary jazz continues with The Soulful Heritage; the debut album for the label from pianist and composer Irina Pavlovic.

Calling on a stellar line-up of musicians, including A.MA label mate Ivan Radivojevic and US vocalist Dean Bowman, Irina has created an album which pays homage to the soul jazz sound of the 1960’s allied with a cinema soundtrack feel that is redolent of the jazz that augmented the films of the French New Wave.
Irina Pavlovic is a pianist and flautist who has developed a distinct style influenced and inspired by Swing, Be-Bop, Hard Bop which she blends with her love of the Blues, Gospel and Afro-Cuban rhythms. A regular performer at Jazz festivals across Central Europe and the Balkans, Irina is an arranger who brings all her musicianship, performance experiences and influences together across the ten tracks of The Soulful Heritage, not least in the lead track Arriba, Arriba, a six minute slab of percussive Be-Bop, and the title track, a beautifully soul fuelled composition featuring the vocals of Dean Bowman.

Available now as a CD and digital download from Bandcamp Irina Pavlovic’s debut The Soulful Heritage is a fine addition to the canon of The Serbian Wave.

On Musikalische Exequien (Musical Exhibitions) featuring Concentus Konig, you will find a dialog between two of the most essential funerary musical works of the German Baroque.

In 2022, we celebrated Heinrich Schütz, a central figure of the album, on the 350th anniversary of his death. As a culmination of a series of projects around his person and work, this recording wants to serve as a tribute to an extraordinary musical legacy that found in Johann Sebastian Bach, its greatest supporter.

The manifest bond between both composers here is seen in the way in which death is shaken and beaten for later, collected from within our soul, be restored and sublimated by two artistic personalities capable of transcending a rich amalgamation of religious, cultural, and musical aspects around the ars moriendi of his time.

Schütz’s Musikalische Exequien and Bach’s Actus Tragicus stem from a creative attitude toward death that is very close to EN home one from the other. Thus, it is not by chance that with their listening, both works fill us with peace and the deep sense of rest with which they do it.

Ambient legend Gier Jenssen goes back to basics on ‘Inland Delta’, improvising on an arsenal of reconditioned vintage synths and mimicking Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and Jean-Michel Jarre.

After masterminding richly conceptual records like 2016’s ‘Departed Glories’ and 2021’s ‘Angel’s Flight’, Jenssen revived his love of analog gear on May’s ‘Shortwave Memories’, using old preset-free synths to craft an ode to the early days of post-punk. ‘Inland Delta’ expands the reach; this time he’s used his vintage gear to evoke the kosmische era, mostly improvising and restraining himself with the processes his predecessors likely used. In this way, it feels slightly boxed-in. The tracks meander grandly but refuse to add much in the way of animation.

‘Delta Function’ splays brassy, sci-fi synths over a lolloping white noise pulse, ‘Franklin’s Dream’ is a moody droner that’s almost woken up by plasticky piano sounds, and ‘Brownian Motion’ is a passive, impromptu concoction that evolves over faint, electrified choirs. Fans of classic synth gear and the raft of secondary private-press reissues from labels like Trunk will no doubt find something to latch onto, but we have to admit – we were expecting a little more.

On the cover of this album you can see a picture of New York taken in Hoboken, New Jersey where we recorded these tracks. To me it represents the beauty of a familiar place seen from a different perspective. I come from a small town in Austria called Judenburg. If my family when I moved to the next bigger city, Graz, it felt like the navel of the world. Graz is considered provincial for the Viennese. Playing in Vienna for the first time seemed the ultimate proof of success until I moved to Boston to study. From Boston, New York seemed like a separate planet, unreachable and frightening. When I finally moved to New York City, I settled in the “village,” considered by many to be the center of jazz. So over the years I’ve moved from the outside to the center and, among other things, I’ve noticed that the center looks very different when you’re in it. It loses all the qualities commonly attributed to it and takes on others. While New York City used to stand for things like speed, pulse, metropolis, today it stands for friends, football in the park, our apartment and the early bird special at a Japanese restaurant. In a way, that’s how I approach the music on this album. I look at standards from an outsider’s perspective. I grew up listening to Mozart, not Ellington, and I was making music long before I discovered jazz. I like being a foreigner, I speak a language other than my mother tongue. I like accents. This is my first Jazz Standards album. I’ve always played them, but rarely in my concerts or on my albums. This recording feels to me like a conversation about standards. A conversation with two of my favorite musicians about music I love.
