Les Baxter (1922-1996) used to be an utterly talented composer and bandleader who was on the go to the max during his active years. His version and as I should say vision of jazz music was a contemporary fresh and colorful sound with an exotic vibe due to the use of many elements of latin music within a modernized big band sound.

This recording is the culmination of a process spanning several years, in which the performers delved into the works of composers found right in their own backyard.
The facts are that all but one of the composers on this recording were born in the 1940s (the exception here is Mark Adderley, who was born in 1960). All of the composers are Norwegian, except for Anders Eliasson from Sweden and Adderley, who is half-English, half-Swedish, and has lived in Norway since 1981.

Newly remastered! Linda Martell was the first African-American woman to make the country charts and to appear at the Grand Ole Opry, and helped lay the groundwork for future artists of color in the genre. Despite multiple TV appearances, a dozen appearances at the Opry, and some big hits – including “Color Him Father”, “Before the Next Teardrop Falls” and “Bad Case of the Blues” – her 1970 debut album, Color Me Country, would also be her last.
