Ulysses and Monteverdi: passion and action at the heart of musical drama. Hélène Jourdan Mourhange met Ravel for the first time after a concert in which she performed his Trio. She was an interesting, intelligent woman, well versed in the arts and culture of her time, and was a talented violinist who, however, had to stop playing years later due to rheumatoid arthritis. She then dedicated herself to musicology, reviews and other artistic activities. Not only that she was, like Lina Tur Bonet, a violin player, but also shared that same disease, which Lina Tur Bonet suffered in her youth. This has made her feel even closer to Ravel, and to feel a desire to make a tribute to Hélène by recording all the pieces written for her and thanks to her.
The close friendship between the two lasted throughout the life of the composer and he often asked her for advice while composing his violin works. In their inexhaustible friendship he affectionately called her “Moune”.

“Chattering Birds” is the name of the new album by percussionist Leonie Klein, on which she can be heard as a soloist and in the ISANIE Percussion Duo with Isao Nakamura. Some of the recorded works are commissioned compositions for the young percussionist and the ISANIE Percussion Duo. Leonie Klein arranged the solo versions of two works herself, in the case of “Speaking Drums” in collaboration with composer Péter Eötvös.
The new album is a journey through the sound worlds of drums: from percussive sounds in combination with spoken language to the typical sound of a drum set to underwater sounds of an aquarium filled with 80 liters of water, everything is included.

‘Round the World with Les Baxter is an album by Les Baxter, His Orchestra and Chorus. It was released in 1957 on the Capitol label (catalog no. T-780). The album was recorded on August 8, 1956.
Upon its release, Billboard gave the album a score of 79 out of 100 and described it as consisting of “glittering performances” with “lush arrangements”.

At the beginning of the 17th century, music in Italy underwent a radical change. From the first experimental attempts in Florence to revive the musical practice of Greek antiquity, which had not been handed down in detail, the genre of the monody developed, in which the singer could finally express all the nuances of the text (the “affects”), freed from the strict constraints of polyphony. To accompany this monophonic singing, new types of plucked instruments emerged, such as the archlute and the theorbo, characterised especially by their powerful bass registers and intense resonances. The new expressive demands invited playing with timbres, (de)crescendi and agogics to convincingly portray human passions, elements that were also applied to purely instrumental music, as in the works on this recording. The rigour of polyphony gave way to a style based more on improvisation, an aspect particularly important to Luca Pianca in his interpretation of solo works for archlute and theorbo by Piccinini, Kapsberger, Melli and Raimondo.

Lenny Kaye drops in and has a nightmare in the key of doo-wop.
During the last two years, over lockdowns, Luke Haines and Peter Buck retreated to a cold war bunker and recorded this double album / manifesto, monster-piece and masterpiece, in answer to the question: Why are all the Kids super bummed out?
