It’s with great joy that we welcome one of Japan’s most revered Ambient act. Manabu Hiramoto has been creating deeply distinct atmospherics since 2003. On this new album he’s combined ritualistic elements with lush, foreboding passages, creating an ode to his country’s unique nature worship.

Based on Japanese mythology sourced from Shinto and Buddhism, “The Birth of the Gods” has at its core nature worship, that the gods exist in all of nature. Composed from deep drones, organic ethereal ambience layered with melodic guitar, piano and field recordings track express the unique characters of nature entities. These seven compositions tap into and reveal some of Japan’s most ancient mysteries.

Royal Blood ignite an epic summer ahead as they announce the September 1st release of their fourth album ‘Back To The Water Below’.

From the very beginning, Royal Blood’s story has been one of two life-long friends whose shared passion and dedication for writing and performing has led them on a remarkable adventure together – a story that has yet to be repeated, and is a feat as rare as it is remarkable. Long before Royal Blood were even formed, they spent years together in various bands playing to half empty bars around Brighton – and only then did they suddenly become a decade-in-the-making overnight success story. One day they were plotting how to recoup the meagre £300 they had spent on their first recording, but within a year they were at the top of UK album charts, storming Glastonbury and winning the BRIT Award for Best British Group.

Even though Abel left behind a sizable oeuvre, including many symphonic works, he is maybe best remembered for his extraordinary compositions for the “queen of all instruments”, as he called it: the viola da gamba.

Having been a true celebrity in the second half of the 18th century, Carl Friedrich Abel has since been largely forgotten. At least, forgotten outside of the viola da gamba community. He was a cellist, composer, and viola da gamba virtuoso, most well-known for his establishment and subsequent managing, together with a son of the great J.S., Johann Christian Bach, of the appropriately-named and extremely successful Bach-Abel concert series in London. Between 1764 and the untimely death of Johann Christian in 1782, this series defined the musical world of London. Abel was sharing a house with Johann Christian at the time and the two must have been extremely close. Abel was devastated by the death of his friend, and turned to alcohol and his fatherland for consolation. Both without success.

The Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11, is a piano concerto written by Frédéric Chopin in 1830, when he was twenty years old. It was first performed on 12 October of that year, at the Teatr Narodowy (the National Theatre) in Warsaw, Poland, with the composer as soloist, during one of his “farewell” concerts before leaving Poland. It was the first of Chopin’s two piano concertos to be published, and was therefore given the designation of Piano Concerto “No. 1” at the time of publication, even though it was actually written immediately after the premiere of what was later published as Piano Concerto No. 2.

Throughout the proceeding lockdowns, the southwest UK-based trio pushed the boundaries of rock and electronic music in isolation, sharing music remotely and refining their style. The result was a unique and sophisticated sound that captivated audiences with cinematic soundscapes, industrial tones, and creative narratives.

Primarily a songwriter and producer in The Juice Is Okay, Matt Masuca is a real world human being creating music fueled by everyday situations and experiences. He also runs Deep Puddle and is writing this sentence. Ditching third person for this. Hi!!

My solo work consists of demo material created in the spirit of making and releasing music as a form of mental liberation. Writing a lot of music for TJIO, much of the works may be worked on for several months or years until release day, so it’s nice to take the pressure off a huge project with something on a smaller scale.

Mélanie Bonis was one of the most interesting and prolific composers in France in the 20 years before the First World War. Married in 1883 to the industrialist Édouard Domange, her duties as a housewife and mother distanced her from Parisian musical life yet did not consign her to silence: following her studies at the Paris Conservatoire she had mélodies and piano pieces issued by various publishers. Obsessed with striking a balance between music and family, she came to notoriety late, becoming the first woman on the board of the Society of Music Composers. Nevertheless, The Great War put an end to any further publication, with Bonis devoting herself to sacred music (for organ or voice) and pedagogical works. She left a large amount of unpublished material to posterity, however, which demonstrates a knowledge of compositional and orchestrational technique unfairly neglected in her lifetime. Christiane Geliot, her great-niece, has dedicated her life to rediscovering Mel Bonis’s works, searching for manuscripts mislaid within her household and inviting celebrated instrumentalists to play and record her music.

After Franck, Debussy and Strauss, Mikko Franck and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France here continue their collaboration with Alpha Classics, this time with the spotlight on Igor Stravinsky. The programme begins with two pieces from his so-called “neo-classic” period: his Capriccio and Octet.

In the first, in which Stravinsky sets up a dialogue between piano and orchestra, the soloist is one of the great stars of the new generation, the French pianist Nathalia Milstein. Then the mood darkens, with the primitive rhythms and ferocious chordal attack of The Rite of Spring, a work that Mikko Franck has long since wanted to immortalize officially: a major masterpiece of the 20th century and an essential milestone for every orchestra.

Every single player seems to be on fire in this recording, which puts the seal on seven years of collaboration and achievement with the Finnish conductor.

Liszt is the greatest innovator of music history ever. Studying his works and performing them I always experience the boundless freedom with which I can approach them. This, of course, does not and cannot mean that Liszt should be played with all kinds of tasteless ‛exaggerations’. At the same time, it is a requirement for all performers to follow the intentions of the author and still present a new quality to the audience. The ‛vacuum’ between the printed and sounding music is a kind of ‛no-man’s-land’ which intrigues me as a pianist. Why? Because in this field we have no protection, that is, borderline cases and critical situations are constant. Even if my previous observation sounds exaggerated, I remind the listener that without this lack of insurance the artist’s approach is not worth a bean. Not only that, but art itself would be useless, irrespective of its genre. A composer who ignores trends dares to proceed forward from the fermented musical idiom, and offsets music history with a renewal of musical language devoid of ‛spleen’ or decadence. This was Liszt and this is what he still means for us.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 29:32 minutes | 308 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © British Progressive Jazz

A soaringly joyous album from British trumpeter Kenny Wheeler – one that has him leading a larger group in a style that resonates with similar projects of the time from artists like Mike Westbrook or Michael Gibbs!

Wheeler delivers some magnificent trumpet and flugelhorn solos – very much at the more straightforward, soulful side of his range – and the ensemble is overflowing with work from top-shelf contemporaries – including Mike Taylor on some key electric piano lines, next to Mike Osborne on alto, Tony Roberts on tenor, Ian Hamer on trumpet, Bobby Lamb and Keith Chrsitie on trombones, Alan Branscombe on acoustic piano, Ron Mathewson on bass, and Tony Oxley on drums and percussion.

The feel of the record is great – very much like better-known sessions where some of the top-shelf UK talents come together in a unified voice – and the set also features guest tenor from Evan Parker, trombone from Chris Pyne, and vocals from Norma Winstone. Winstone sings on “Song For Someone” – and other instrumental tracks include “Mikei”, “Some Days Are Better”, and “CP EP”.

Recorded live in London on the 24th May 1971. Previously unreleased. Stereophonic sound. Currently the earliest known recording of Kenny Wheeler leading his own big band.

Piano music spanning three decades by the foremost living Minimalist composer of our time. John Adams has won listeners from far beyond the traditional classical world thanks to his energy over the course of more than half a century in writing music that speaks directly to hearts and minds with undiminished energy, reflecting contemporary concerns and technologies while also crafted with traditional finesse. As well as a composer he has been an active promoter and performer – not only of his own music but of his contemporaries and those who exercised a decisive influence on him as a student in California, including Debussy and Stravinsky. His parents wereboth jazz musicians and he grew up in a household where, as he says, ‘Benny Goodman and Mozart were not separated’. There is a corresponding harmony between traditional and modern idioms in his own music. Both written in 1977, Phrygian Gates and its briefer pendant or companion, China Gates, were game-changers for the course of Adams’s music. Although his output for the instrument is not large, it was with the piano that Adams discovered the possibilities of slowly moving, patterned textures that had already seized his attention in the compositions of Steve Reich. Phrygian Gates is a broad monolithic arch, roughly 24 minutes long, which is built upon a plan that resembles the classic ‘tour’ of the twelve keys, while entirely confined to the Lydian and Phrygian modes of ancient music.

This project has been a very special adventure for me. I have made every decision deliberately and with a lot of thought. I would like to thank Patrick Peikert, director of Claves Records, for this experience. To have the chance to record a solo CD is an incredible opportunity, which I am endlessly grateful for.

The program I selected, is dedicated to my love for the british viola repertoire. I really wanted the CD to sound as cohesive as possible, whilst it explores all different emotional and timbral ranges. Clarke, Britten and Bowen are three exceptional examples of that.
