Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is best known for his cantata Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast, which brought him international success as well as propelling his career at home in the UK – success which was remarkable in stuffy late-Victorian England because of his mixed race and humble origins. Born out of wedlock to Daniel Taylor, a medical student from Sierra Leone, and Alice Holmans, Samuel was brought up by his mother and step-father, George Evans, a railway worker, in Croydon, south London.

“His music filled me with the urge to connect with the world,” Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith says of Emile Mosseri. She first heard his work while watching the 2019 film The Last Black Man In San Francisco; just minutes in, she paused it to look up who did the score and wrote to him immediately. “I love Emile’s ability to create melodies that feel magically scenic and familiar like they are reminding you of the innocence of loving life.”

Music for Modified Melodica was born out of two explorations: one of tuning (and subsequently degrading) the small reeds of a melodica, and the other to modify it playable with foot pumps, allowing for the sustained excitation of the reeds.

Kaori Muraji (村治佳織; born 14 April 1978) is a Japanese classical guitarist. She is the first Japanese artist to have signed an exclusive international contract with Decca Music Group.

Muraji learned to play the guitar from the age of 3 on. First she was taught by her father and from the age of ten by the guitarist Shinichi Fukuda. In the early 1990s she won several guitar competition in Japan and in 1993 gave her debut recital in the Tsuda Hall. In the same year she published with Espressivo her first album and in the following she had her Orchestra debut with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 1997 she moved to Europe to study under Alberto Ponce at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris. After her graduation 1999 she moved back to Japan.

Decca’s Kaori Muraji Plays Bach doesn’t make any pretensions toward representing the music of Johann Sebastian Bach in his historical element as has become commonplace. The orchestra used to accompany star guitarist Kaori Muraji in transcriptions of two Bach harpsichord concertos and the Air on a G String (to utilize this movement’s popular title), the so-called Leipzig Bach Collegium, is a typical chamber orchestra made up of modern instruments, played in a modern way; sometimes the string basses even employ pizzicato effects, a device alien to Bach in his known orchestral scores. Likewise the part-writing in the orchestral accompaniments have been tweaked, particularly in the Air on a G String where figures in the solo part interact in a dialogue with similar gestures in the orchestra; a feature that will certainly cause Bach purists in the audience to say, “What the hell?” To get to first base with Kaori Muraji Plays Bach one will need to be able to accept the long-held notion that Bach can just about survive any treatment one can put him through or to simply not to care about the matter. Muraji, as is her wont, plays just as well here as she does on her other discs, and the solo pieces – “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” (which sounds a little like it is overdubbed) the D minor Violin Partita and, as a bonus track, the Minuets BWV Anh. 114-115 once attributed to Bach and now known as the work of Christian Pezold are the highlights of the disc. In the orchestrally accompanied tracks Muraji is often a little buried in the mix and the tone of the string group is a little heavy, sounding a little like the “Baroque orchestras” common to recordings made in the 1950s and ’60s. It’s not too much of a distraction, though, and the reading of the oft-transcribed “Siciliano” in the E major harpsichord concerto is genuinely lovely.

Koven produces a strong 14 track sophomore album with Butterfly Effect. This thing is beautiful front to back. Katie’s vocals are top-notch throughout, only to a fault of one track. Half of the tracks on this project hit the chorus with what feels like classic euphoria. While this LP has a pretty equal balance of Drumstep and Drum & Bass style tracks, the DnB on Butterfly Effect is easily the standout tracks. I feel like I’ve been waiting for a long time for a melodic, drum-heavy, EDM album, and this is it!

A fascinating juxtaposition – the seven early toccatas of Johann Sebastian Bach are interleaved with the 6th of Peter Seabourne’s nine Steps cycles, the concept of renowned Bach player, Konstantin Lifschitz. Far from the Romantic toccata style, these canvases are multi-sectional kaleidoscopes of texture and tempi – each a miniature world encompassing virtuosity, intimacy and narrative. In the masterly hands of Lifschitz the result is a monumental journey of extraordinary invention.

Following his acclaimed first recording for Alpha Classics, Saga, the German baritone Konstantin Krimmel continues to tell us stories, with a programme focusing on Zauberoper or ‘magic opera’.

Accompanied by the Hofkapelle München orchestra conducted by Rüdiger Lotter, Krimmel explores operas by Mozart, Salieri and Gluck, alongside less well-known titles by Paul Wranitzky and Peter von Winter: spectacular musical comedies from the eighteenth-century Viennese repertory, with their enchanted fairytale universe.

Compared with the catalogues of, say, Schubert, Loewe, or Schumann, the song output of Franz Liszt seems quite modest in terms of sheer quantity. Unexpected obstacles make it difficult, however, to obtain an overview of all the Lieder the Weimar virtuoso ever wrote. Not all of Liszt’s songs are published as sheet music, and this has always been the case; the only currently available collection is a meager anthology of ca. 40 Lieder. One is soon obliged to resort to out-of-print material. The old, 3-volume Leipzig collection edited by C. F. Kahnt contains 57 songs, whereas the most complete edition is the one from 1919-1920 by Carl Alexander, Archduke of Weimar, which is hard to come by. In the meantime, Internet platforms such as Petrucci (imslp.org) have become well-stocked archives where one can find older sheet music that would otherwise be unavailable.

The expression ‘Oceanic feeling’ is coined by Romain Rolland in a 1927 in the letter to Sigmund Freud to refer to “a sensation of ‘eternity’”, a feeling of “being one with the external world as a whole”.

According to Rolland, this feeling is the source of all the religious energy that permeates in various religious systems.

Personally, this sort of feeling is linked to the question about the boundaries around our entity which I conceived when I watched the dance piece ‘ SARA’ by Sharon Eyal (I still didn’t know about the word Oceanic Feeling that time).

A feeling like the one below came to me.

At the very end of ’SARA’, when the dancers finished the piece gently forming all together a sleeping pose, it seemed as though they were to be back in their original state.

This led me even further to wonder about the limit of our bodies or even our individualities themselves. It sometimes appears to me to be so variable and ambiguous.

This experience reminded me of the image of a baby in the womb. In my mother’s body, I was floating in the water (the components of amniotic fluid are nearly the same as the ones of the ocean), and I was still connected to the other person by the umbilical code.

Second volume devoted to the chamber music of the Hungarian pianist-composer-conductor, illustrating the late blossoming of a neo-Germanic Romanticism combined with Magyar nationalism in the style of Brahms. Concertante music in the heritage of Liszt, creating a dialogue between the keyboard compere, with strings treated like an ensemble of soloists. A new tribute paid to a master who made the Hungarian musical scene and his younger colleagues Bartók, Kodály and Weiner internationally famous between the wars.
