Otto Klemperer was a conductor who must necessarily be mentioned in the same breath as Furtwängler, Karajan, Walter or Toscanini. Klemperer was a sculptor who often favored harsh, dark sounds and hard accents in his interpretations, and this at a time when Furtwängler’s great breath was considered the highest. But if one listens closely, Klemperer’s breathtaking interpretations possess the same depth and intensity, only that he presents them differently, less pleasingly. No other conductor has managed to interpret Beethoven’s symphonies as darkly and archaically as Klemperer.
