At the age of 17, Lofgren was already a member of Neil Young’s band and played piano on his album After the Gold Rush and guitar on one song. During this time, he recorded four albums with his own band called Grin. After Mick Taylor left the Rolling Stones, he was one of the possible successors.

In 1975, Lofgren began his career as a solo artist. He had several single hits with songs such as Back It Up, Keith Don’t Go (this song is about Keith Richards’ drug problems), I Came to Dance as well as Shine Silently and No Mercy. He became known in Germany in 1976 through appearances on Rockpalast and on the 5th Rockpalast Night on October 6, 1979. To this day, he tours as a solo artist when his other bands take a break.

In 1984, Lofgren became the second guitarist in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. He replaced Steven Van Zandt. Springsteen parted ways with the E Street Band at the end of the 1980s. Lofgren then released further albums and went on tour as an accompanying musician with Springsteen, Patti Scialfa, Neil Young and Ringo Starr’s ‘All Starr Band’. 1999 saw the reunion of the E Street Band, in which Van Zandt and Lofgren have played together ever since.

Since May 2018, Lofgren has also been playing in Neil Young’s backing band Crazy Horse again, replacing long-time guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro, initially for a few live performances. Since 2019, Neil Young has recorded the three studio albums Colorado (2019), Barn (2021) and World Record (2022) with Nils Lofgren as Crazy Horse guitarist.
