An opéra-comique by an Italian composer? It was a rarity in its day, but after the “narrowly averted disaster” of the premiere, Donizetti’s La Fille du régiment became a huge success, not least because of the high Cs demanded of Tonio in the famous tenor aria, “Ah! mes amis, quel jour de fête!” The story revolves around Marie, the regimental canteen girl whose lover Tonio joins the army to be near her when she is elevated to the peerage. This highly acclaimed Teatro Donizetti production has been alternately called “hilarious … tender and moving … [and] stunningly brilliant” by bachtrack.com.
