“Dantesca” from the ‘Le Choix de France Musique’ label is now available! Luigi Grasso, born in Ariano Irpino, Italy, in 1986, is one of the most exciting jazz personalities of his generation. Thanks to his upbringing, he discovered jazz and classical music at an early age: he began studying the saxophone at the age of 5, somewhat by chance, to treat his asthma.
As an original, brilliant and inspired composer, he has finally succeeded in bringing together, without any kind of compromise, two worlds that have watched each other with a certain amount of mistrust for over a hundred years: jazz and classical music. Suite Dantesca, which draws its inspiration from Dante’s Divine Comedy, is one of the very first works to feature a jazz soloist in a symphony orchestra with no reference to the jazz world.
It is with the naturalness of a bilingual child that Grasso approaches the union of the two worlds that have built him, his imagination nourished by the same source where Maurice Ravel, Bud Powell, Igor Stravinsky and Thelonious Monk rub shoulders…
