Little Richard (* December 5, 1932 in Macon, Georgia, as Richard Wayne Penniman; † May 9, 2020 in Tullahoma, Tennessee) was an American rock ’n’ roll singer, pianist and songwriter. During the most successful phase of his career at Specialty Records in the mid-1950s, the African-American musician combined stylistic elements from blues, gospel and rhythm and blues under the new genre designation “rock’n’roll” and thus transferred them into the musical mainstream. After high rankings in the rhythm and blues charts dominated by black artists, he managed to cross over into the genre-independent American pop market. His fast and powerful piano playing, his loud and over-turned singing as well as his energetic concerts inspired many well-known musicians.

After a retreat of several years for religious studies, Little Richard began a comeback in the 1960s, for which he further developed his sound in the direction of soul and funk. Without being able to build on previous sales successes, he increased the extravagance of his stage performances by self-staging and elements of travesty. Since the 1980s, Little Richard has only been sporadically in the recording studio or on stage. Due to his genre-defining and widely covered songs and their chart successes, Little Richard is one of the pioneers and main representatives of rock’n’roll, which is why he was one of the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
