This beautiful collection of Nordic works for string orchestra is packed with Scandinavian passion and melancholy, and melodies that stay with you long after Sibelius’s devastating “Valse triste” has faded away. There are some gorgeous discoveries here, from Bræin’s intense “Serenade for Viola and String Orchestra” and Atterberg’s searing “Suite for Violin, Viola and String Orchestra”, hypnotic in its use of gorgeous, modal harmonies and sweeping lines. Sinding’s yearning “Serenade for Harp and String Orchestra” draws on folksong influences while Halvorsen’s “Chant de Veslemøy” has a simple, delightful charm. The LGT Soloists play with bags of expression and a clear love for this beautiful music.

Founded by the young German violinist Alexander Gilman and pianist Marina Seltenreich with the help of a big multinational bank, the LGT Young Soloists Academy is a string ensemble based in Hanover and made up of very gifted young musicians aged from 12 to 23, hailing from over a dozen countries. Its philosophy is based around three fundamental concepts, which consist of a very high level of instrumental training, a unique opportunity to build up experience as a soloist, and rigorous preparation for a demanding professional life.

Behind every member there is a soloist: each of them have won national and international prizes. After two albums with RCA composed by a selection of Italian composers, or inspired by Italy, and another dedicated to the soul of Russia, it is the turn of Nordic music, which forms the focus of this new album, entitled “Nordic Dream”.

Recorded at Berlin’s Jesus Christus Kirche, famous for its extraordinary acoustics, we find a panoply of works from different Nordic composers, forming a rather sentimental, romantic self which perfectly showcases the ensemble’s very young soloists. – François Hudry
