This series of recordings that Kurt Sanderling did with the Berliner Sinfonia-Orchester (BSO – not the BPO) date from the late 1970s and are remarkable for their depth of understanding and delivery. This disc, recorded in 1978 and still in completely acceptable sound, delivers one of the most convincing recordings yet made of this final symphony. This performance joins the others by Sanderling which altogether add up to a very fine series indeed.

Kurt Sanderling fled to the Soviet Union in 1936 to escape Hitler returning in 1960 to East Germany. A case of jumping from the fire into a frying pan perhaps. During this time and as conductor of the Leningrad Symphony Orchestra he got to know Shostakovich well on a personal level and also had personal knowledge of the dangers facing creative artists during that time.

This disc includes an interesting and informative evaluation/discussion of the symphony and its possible meaning between Sanderling and Hans Bitterlich during which each movement is the subject of such comment. Consequently the use of musical imagery in all four movements is explored and explained in the light of Shostakovich’s often contradictory statements – also explained. The actual performance as recorded here is deeply convincing and committed with an excellent contribution from the orchestra both corporately and individually. The balance of the recording is more faithful than many and as such is a great help.
