With his Christmas album It’s Christmas! Jonas Kaufmann 2020 succeeded an atmospheric and extremely successful holiday album. Just in time for the concert tour, which finally takes place this winter, an “extended edition” with seven new titles will be released on October 29th by Sony Classical.

“The incredibly beautiful success and the joy of the first Christmas album tempted me to go into the studio again this year to pay tribute to a genre of music that immediately triggers Christmas spirit for me, who grew up in Bavaria and Tyrol: the Alpine Stubenmusi,” says Jonas Kaufmann.

Newly added are the English greeting, Auf, you shepherds, When Mary went over the mountains, Born at Bethlehem, Now we begin to sing and Mary’s lullaby. In these six miniatures he is accompanied by his Chiemgau colleague Stefanie Irányi and in “original instrumentation” with dulcimer, harp, violin, clarinet and double bass. Also new is the French Trois anges sont venus ce soir with a string ensemble. It was on this song that his fellow singer Ludovic Tézier drew his attention.

Jonas Kaufmann has had a special relationship with Christmas since he was an eight-year-old on the front page of a Munich daily newspaper after he had described his home Christmas Eve so vividly at a storytelling competition at his school that he received a prize for it. The songs he has chosen evoke in him happy memories of the joys of the Christmas season, from grateful devotion to tumultuous feasts with friends and relatives.
