John Nelson at the head of the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra continues the Berlioz adventure with the dramatic symphony Romeo and Juliet (with Joyce DiDonato, Cyrille Dubois and Christopher Maltman) as well as the lyric scene Cleopatra (with Joyce DiDonato).

“What makes Hector Berlioz such a great composer? “, asks the conductor John Nelson.
“In a word, originality… He broke all existing traditions of orchestration, structure, harmonic language and narration. Even today, his music is fresh, surprising us at every turn with an inexpressible beauty. Nelson is now adding two more surprisingly original works by Berlioz – the “dramatic symphony” Romeo and Juliet and the “lyrical scene” The Death of Cleopatra to his Erato discography.

He continues the fruitful relationship with the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, his choice for the recordings of the Trojans, The Damnation of Faust, Harold in Italy and Summer Nights. Joyce DiDonato, her unforgettable Dido and Marguerite, returns as a suicidal Cleopatra and she is joined in Romeo and Juliet by the tenor Cyrille Dubois (who was Iopas in The Trojans).
