Jean Cocteau wrote the Beautiful Indifferent in 1940 for an actress Edith Piaf. For the first time, the Virêvolte ensemble puts it to music and commissions Jean-Marie Machado, with the support of the Cocteau Committee, to create a tailor-made jazz opera. It will be directed by Emmanuel Olivier and premiered in December 2021 at the Center of the Banks of the Marne and then performed throughout France.
At the intersection of the café-concert and the theater review, our reading of the Beautiful Indifferent is firmly rooted in a popular tradition. We will treat the play as a complete show in a succession of numbers ranging from songs to opera arias, from comedy to romance, from dance to burlesque. Our approach is multiple and innovative at the intersection of musical genres and aesthetics. It will arouse the curiosity of opera lovers as well as fans of more contemporary writings or imprinted with ethnic and traditional rhythms. The theatrical form of this café-concert which links the numbers is intended to be festive and full of twists and turns.

Like a Loyal Madam who is both a seer and a witch, Cocteau’s heroine, embodied by the singer, will therefore project her fantasies on the walls of the music hall like the artist’s drawings on the walls of the Villa Santo Sospir. The focus is on the energy of this woman, who is never a victim; on her true madness and not on her suffering.
