Heinrich Schütz, Dieterich Buxtehude and J. S. Bach are considered the most important musicians and composers of their generations in Germany. Buxtehude was, for a long time, mainly renowned for his organ music, and it was only through the German musicologist and librarian Carl Stiehl’s discovery of the Düben Collection in 1888 that his vocal music started to gain attention. His chamber music first came into focus during the 1970s, when research about the performance practices of early music started to be conducted on a larger scale, along with performances with period instruments. Buxtehude’s trio sonatas now belong to the standard repertoire. Ensemble Mélero plays a selection of trio sonatas on this recording with the ambition to give examples of his sense of variety and inventiveness. With the variations for harpsichord, the goal is to give the listener further examples of Buxtehude’s ornamentation and ability to vary over a given theme.

Ensemble Mélero is known for performing instrumental music from around 1650–1750, focusing on music composed for baroque violin, bass viol and harpsichord. The trio has been active since 2008 and is based in Stockholm. The instrument combination offers a varied musical experience – from pure simplicity to lively polyphony.
