The music of Mael Bailly undoubtedly bears the imprint, not the weight, of his mentor, composer Gerard Pesson, since Bailly Sr. is endowed with a well-known benevolence and generosity. Sound textures shimmer with a wide range of color fumaroles, both finely chiseled and sometimes melting like magma. In this game of hands, or sound classics, as Mael Bailly himself calls it, sounds develop, continue and imitate each other in a rhythmic vortex that is sometimes ruthlessly robotic, and sometimes endowed with a tense elasticity that gives a new dimension to discourse. In other cases, they are endowed with intense flexibility, which gives the discourse a special impression of indecision, especially when it develops in an open form. The spirit of improvisation often lurks in the shadows.
