Gildas Pungier adapts the famous composer’s scores for choir, piano, double bass, clarinet and accordion, building a bridge between Brahms’ music and popular Gypsy music.

While Johannes Brahms’ famous Gypsy-inspired “Hungarian Dances” are fairly well known, his contribution to the choral repertoire in the same field remains relatively unknown to the general public. And yet… The composer wrote several opuses devoted to this music of popular origin, very much in vogue in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The dances that inspired Brahms were “czardas” (literally “inns” in Hungarian). These couple dances alternate a slow part with a very fast, agitated part. These “czardas” originated in Eastern Europe, but Brahms heard them performed in the manner of Gypsy musicians. Virtually improvised, they were an opportunity for Gypsy musicians to show off their dazzling virtuosity while defending the spirit of freedom of this nomadic people.

Gildas Pungier’s challenge? To bring Gypsy music face to face with Brahms’ pieces inspired by it! A daring but exciting challenge! With the complicity of the Bankal Trio, whose mission is to interpret the music of Eastern Europe (particularly the Balkans), this programme mixes popular and learned music with jubilation and nostalgia.
