Two of the major works that made Claudio Monteverdi the innovator of the musical world of his time were concentrated between 1607 and 1608 in Mantua: Orfeo, Favola in musica in 5 acts (24th February 1607, libretto by Alessandro Striggio Jr.) and Arianna, Tragedia in a single act (28th May 1608, libretto by Ottavio Rinuccini). The disappearance of any of Arianna’s scores remains an unsolved mystery. We do not know what the musical style of the opera was, but from Rinuccini’s libretto, we can guess that it was a development of the Florentine model of the Musiche di Iacopo Peri […] sopra l’Euridice del signor Ottavio Rinuccini (Florence, 6th October 1600).
The libretto, from the opening in which Venus and Cupid converse with each other, leads back to the style of the Ballo delle Ingrate, staged the week after L’Arianna (4th June 1608), which Monteverdi published thirty years later as the conclusion of the VIII libro di madrigali (1638).

As a piano trio, we find it particularly interesting to discover music that is seldom recorded or performed. We enjoy the artistic challenge of interpreting such works using our own individual approach and it enables us to offer interesting and diverse programming. The idea of uncovering and recording lesser known pieces for our first CD led us to include a wonderful early work by George Enescu, his Trio No. 1, along with the youthful Benjamin Britten’s Introduction and Allegro. Finding our own voice with these scores, free from preconceived musical ideas or influences, is a process that inspires us. It is an exploration that we regard as an invaluable experience. Both Enescu and Britten found inspiration through Ravel’s music and this in turn led us to his Piano Trio in A minor, hailed as one of the great masterworks of the 20th century.

Al Fajer Group was established in Kuwait in 1987, co-founded by four artists: Sima Kanaan (Vocals), Bashar Shammout (Guitar) Jameel Saraj (Oud and Guitar) and Nizar Alyan (Percussion). Al Fajer Group became known for their unique frequencies and the transparency of their sound. The band is rooted in acoustic oud, guitar and percussion and they never used any electronic equipment during their sets. When they were first established they would perform Palestinian patriotic songs, related to the Palestinian liberation struggle. They released their launch album, recorded on reel tapes, during the First Intifada in 1988, after which they began composing and writing their own original music. They were unable to release this due to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990, when all the band members were forced to leave the country and could not reunite to release the second album. During the limited time in which they were able to work together, they participated in multiple tours in Kuwait, Iraq, Germany and other locations.

Jean Gilles (Tarascon, 1688), Chapel Master of Toulouse Cathedral from 1697, was a genius struck down at the age of just 37, in 1705. The entire kingdom admired his famed Mass for the Dead, which was played at his own funeral “he sealed his score with his last will and testament, in which he asked that the Chapter have this mass sung to lay his soul to rest”, then performed throughout the century, both in concert and for the funerals of Campra (1744), Rameau (1764) and Louis XV (1774). Fabien Armengaud and his ensemble from the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles perform this masterpiece with the addition of a new motet, Domine Deus Meus, replete with dramatic effects including an awe-inspiring tempest. The powerful prince-archbishop of Salzburg, who was known for extraordinary religious celebrations, received a particularly splendid mass from Georg Muffat for the feast of Pentecost in 1690. Muffat fused Italian, French, and German stylistic elements in his music and added extravagant verve. The music is written for 24 obbligato voices performing five choruses distributed around the room. Le Banquet Céleste and La Guilde des Mercenaires rose to the challenge and placed their musicians in the Palace Chapel of Versailles as required.

I thought to post this album because yesterday, talking to my cousin, he told me that Rosana Toledo was our neighbor and that it was my aunt who made the first dress for her to perform on the old TV Itacolomi. So, in honor of the good times, the good memories and my dear aunt Zizinha, let’s listen to Rosana Toledo a little.
Mineira de Belo Horizonte, born in 1934, began her career with her sister Maria Helena Toledo (who would marry Luiz Bonfá). In the 50s he pursued a solo career, consecrating himself with the Moonlight Sonata. Although a romantic singer, her singing style and her voice made her participation in bossa nova natural. In 1975 he participated in the Minerva Project “100 years of Brazilian Popular music”. In 1986 he recreated, in a tribute to Custódio Mesquita, by Funarte, Nocturno em Tempo de Samba and Saia do Caminho.
Ray Barretto – Indestructible (1973/2023)

Indestructible is one of Barretto’s most solidly consistent efforts, a series of Afro-Cuban rhythms and song styles illustrated by a stomping band that knows how to move the classic material in a jazz manner into improvisation and then back again. The opener, “El Hijo de Oblata,” is a case in point: a piano line playing a steaming son line sets the base for the horn section to widen it; next comes the chorus on the vocal melody, propped up all around by an army of percussionists, and they all meld together before the tempo slows momentarily and slips into a five/eight Latin-tinged jazz number where the pianist takes a solo rich in arpeggios, and smooths the rough-edged rhythms out with large augmented and suspended chords. When the line begins again, it’s twice as fast and the percussion section moves into overdrive with the piano so that the vocalists can barely keep up! In addition, there are gorgeous merengues here; a rumba or two; and a few more sons. Most noteworthy is the lovely and shimmering “El Diablo,” with a call and response vocal that the claves and shakers and bata drums play counterpoint to. This is solid all the way through, and can only be called “salsa” in the most generic sense of that word — there is too much other stuff going on here, too many traditional moments being banded together with jazz to gentrify this music.
