Nicole Heartseeker began playing the organ as a junior student and continued her master class studies in harpsichord and piano. She placed an emphasis on the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Max Reger, and the preservation of historical musical traditions. During her intensive study of sa-cred organ music, she developed the desire to transfer this specific art of music-making to the pi-ano. After her training as a classical musician, Nicole Heartseeker realized increasingly unusual pro-jects. With her unique blend of classical, jazz and world music, she defies the usual notions of gen-re boundaries. Nicole Heartseeker describes her idea for the album That’s Amore: They are songs that take me into another world and touch me deeply. I didn’t dare to interpret them independently for a long time. Then came Mulo. An evening with friends, lots of wine, I sat down at the grand piano. He took his saxophone, played the old melodies free of shyness and dis-solved ingrained patterns through improvisation. In the weeks that followed, we set to work on this album and went into the studio. Mulo Francel is a saxophonist and globetrotter. Furthermore known as the creative whirlwind of the ensemble Quadro Nuevo. For many years, the multiple ECHO award winner has been traveling the countries of this world playing. From Bavaria to the Balkans to Bolivia and Buenos Aires. Concert tours have taken him from Hong Kong to the opera in Cairo to New York’s Carnegie Hall. Over the years, he has developed his own authentic way of playing world music. His distinctive style explores the boundaries between tango, classical, jazz and improvisation. Mulo Francel gave more than 4000 concerts worldwide, received many awards like the European Impa-la, the ECHO Jazz for the best live act and the Golden Record for the Quadro Nuevo Album Mocca Flor. The magazine Kulturnews attributed to him the currently most sensual saxophone sound in Europe.

The year 1919: A point in time, European countries, a young woman, a young man and an elderly gentleman. This is the musical triptych that Marion Leleu and pianist Bertrand Giraud, who plays the wonderful grand piano Opus 102 by Stephen Paulello, have chosen for our CD. These three composers could scarcely be more different, whether in their social situation, their geographical background, or their psychological make-up. Nevertheless the three are linked by their inspiration and their powers of musical invention, which is what has fascinated Marion Leleu from the start of this project. Like the waves of the sea in her homeland of Brittany, their melodic phrases come and go, they grow, develop amazing power, finally burst apart or die away gently. Joseph Ryelandt’s Sonata op. 73 enthralled her at once and she is very happy to be the first to record this work and bring out the score in a new edition together with Bertrand Giraud. This music deserves to be better known, and she hopes it will soon be part of the Romantic repertoire for the viola. The Sonata op.11/4 by Paul Hindemith is like a river or a journey, and although the playing time is not very long, you can feel like a marathon and remains a continuing challenge for the artists. The last work, the Sonata by Rebecca Clarke, is a necessary and moving call to offer her female successors greater visibility and freedom in the world of music. Marion Leleu: “Playing this work is like a return to the source of your feelings as a musician.”

This album, the first in Kodama’s planned Beethoven cycle, begins with the composer’s so-called “easy” sonatas. In the words of the booklet’s annotator, Franz Steiger, they represent “lyrical islands,” being less fervent or affirmative than many of his other works in this genre. The two-movement sonatas Nos. 19 and 20 served an educational purpose, and every budding young pianist has studied them. I remember the wonderful moment when my teacher “graduated” me from these to the bigger No. 25, with its brusque humor and brisk tempos—and then, a bit later, to the wonderful No. 24, which is full of technical and musical problems.
