The compositions on this recording are all spontaneous. My score is the world we live in. The result is my emotional and musical interpretation of the forces that course through the planet: war and violence, greed and poverty, arrogance and colonialism, consumerism and vapidity, racism and genocide, patriotism and scoundrelism, as well as the obscured inner layers of beauty and fortitude, hope and goodwill, and increasing solidarity among the oppressed.

“I have come to the world of visual art quite late in life. I do collage. My palette is very simple,
I work with scissors, glue stick, and for some things, a photo copier. My source material comes mainly from old magazines and discarded books often found in the thrift store. Like I said, simple!”

Tell the Birds I Said Hello is the fourth album by guitarist Steve Cardenas, saxophonist Ted Nash, and Ben Allison. It features eight tunes that Herbie never recorded, six of which had been sitting in storage since the 1950s, until a few years ago when they were discovered by a relative. These “new” Nichols masterpieces contain all of the elements of his music that we love — the humor and beauty of his melodies, the great titles, and the surprising twists and turns of harmony and form that make them truly unique.
The album was recorded in stunning detail by our long-time collaborator Matt Balitsaris at Maggie’s Farm. Ben mixed the album and created the artwork.

The background for this release is that I have previously released two guitar trio records; LOS 130-2 Poinciana (2014) and LOS 175-2 But Not For Me (2017), both on Losen Records. This music is inspired by the American pianist Ahmad Jamal and especially his trio in the late 1950s with drummer Vernel Fournier and bassist Israel Cosby. Their trio sound has been a great inspiration for me, with their elegant swinging cool jazz, beautifully arranged with playful spontaneity – pure magic! This release One For John! can in many ways be heard as an extension of my two previous albums, thus completing a trilogy. However this time, the standards have been replaced by original compositions. In collaboration with Frederik Villmow, all but one song has been composed especially for this project. It is with great pleasure that we can now share this music with you and we hope that you will enjoy the album.
