Bassist Wojtek Stanisz debuts his own material Szuflandia, which consists of nine original themes. Until now, Stanisz has worked as a session musician and teacher m.in. in the musical sheepfold, in Jaworki near Szczawnica.
Wojtek Stanisz is assisted by Piotr Wieczorek (guitars, banjo), Marcin Jagiełło (keyboards) and Jan Szkudlarek (drums). Wojtek Kidoń plays guest drums, Mateusz Smoczyński enriches the title drawer on violin, Viktor Tatarek plays guitar in Requiem for Unknown, and Flahjo was recorded with the participation of the Barrels Cello Quartet arranged by Wojtek Lemański.
The tracks on the album draw on accessible fusion with influences from world music. The leader admits that when creating the album, he was inspired by memories of old pharmacies and the film Kingsajz by Juliusz Machulski, and the drawer mechanism worked on his imagination. The interpretation of the title Szuflandia Stanisz leaves to the listeners.

Naima Bock, who spent six years in the UK group Goat Girl, makes decidedly modern folk music. She’s fashioned a varied, introspective debut in Giant Palm that mixes indie rock attitude with electronics, large ensembles, and nuanced arrangements. Giant Palm is different from your average solo folk performance, mostly because of the intricate settings around Bock’s voice—the effects of many hours spent arranging and recording. “Every Morning” opens with a swoosh of voices exclaiming in unison, “Hello, darling,” before Bock sings a mournful melody which the chorus sometimes joins, one female breaking solo into a high wordless vocal. After she sings “This web I’ve spun large but thin/ Easily broken in/ And I lie-lie-lie,” the melody is tootled to a close by a single whistler. “Working” sways to a tropical rhythm that tenor saxophonist Nathan Piggott and trumpeter Fred Wordsworth play around. The multi-part production “Campervan” features a dozen players: two violins, two backing vocalists, three saxophones, a clarinet, drums, and bass join producer Joel Burton’s piano and Bock’s guitar, blossoming into big band chamber music. Engineer Syd Kemp captures the ensembles of varying size and instrumental makeup with precise yet warm brilliance from tune to tune. The unifying element is Bock’s low voice; its doleful, downcast tone casts a somber but agreeable shade across the entire album. In “Instrumental,” which opens with just piano and drums, a saxophone enters as the sound of a cocktail party and chirping birds fade in and out. Bock, who is of Greek and Brazilian heritage, sings in Portuguese in closer “O Morro,” her plaintive tone worked to perfection in this duet with Burton who also plays a synthesizer in a Fender Rhodes mode. This originality and the power of arrangements make Giant Palm quietly encouraging.

This new release from DUX presents two 19th-century works of two Polish composers belonging to two different generations, so far almost unknown.
Violin Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp minor, Op. 14, by Polish violin virtuoso Henryk Wieniawski was first performed on October 27, 1853 in Leipzig. The score is dedicated to King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia.
Written between 1875-79, Noskowski’s Symphony No. 2 in C Minor “Elegiac” is a response to the failed anti-Czarist January Uprising of 1863 (when you’re Polish and you don’t have a country, 12 years is like yesterday). Although the notes suggest that a somber, minor-key atmosphere is the dominant element, the cut-and-thrust of the outer movements (the finale ending optimistically with a quotation from the Polish “national anthem”) is riveting and vitalizing while the second movement scherzo, in krakowiak rhythm, is a close cousin to Dvorák’s and Brahms’ national dances and the third movement Elegy is solemn without being despairing.

If I didn’t know them, I would still feel, listening to this album, that they are good friends in private life – not “just” colleagues – who know each other’s thoughts and feelings and pay maximum attention to each other’s every musical and human emotion. The heart and soul are also very much in evidence. As the way the themes are played and shaped in each case brings out their beauty and sentimentality.
Szakcsi Jr.’s textbook, beautiful strumming, captivating “intros”, uplifting harmonies and improvisations captivate the listener. They have everything that makes us jazz lovers! The subtlety and tastefulness as well as the swinging, the excellent “time” or the “supreme” level of melodic development.
Krisztián and Elemér are a tightly knit, world-class rhythm section who, among other traits, are masters of the mainstream. They accompany with full attention to the soloist, in a way that even inspires Béla to a great extent. They do all this with the utmost love and humility, as the goal is the pinnacle of chamber music performance, which these wonderful artists achieve!
Of course, they also show us their virtuosity through their solos (too), and the swing feeling is tight yet airy, something that every soloist in the world craves.

Fairport Convention co-founder and bassist Ashley Hutchings and legendary singer, Sandy Denny parted ways with the group after their classic Liege And Leaf album. Hutchings recruited Tim Hart and Maddy Prior (an established folk duo) and Terry and Gay Woods, naming their new band after a character in the traditional song “Horkstow Grange.” While their line-up fluctuated (Terry Woods would leave and later become the bassist in the classic Pogues line-up a decade later), the band solidified and continues to this day.

The news follows a busy 2023 for the British-Nigerian R&B artist, who played a number of landmark festivals including Glastonbury, SXSW, De Roma, and The Great Escape. She also featured on Phabo’s most recent album — the latest collaboration in a list that already included the likes of Lalah Hathaway, Jorja Smith, and Little Simz.
“‘What’s Luv?’ is for anyone who’s ever lost themselves in love. People who love hard and passionately can often forget that ultimately, no one can pour into them more than themselves,” Universe said of her latest release. “I wrote this song as a reminder of that. Love people, love life, love love, but also ensure you love yourself enough.”

AUTUMN’S DARLING, my new release on Stunt Records and Sundance Music, leans heavily into my rural upbringing in Maine and features a deep roster of creative voices and riveting, country-curious storytelling.
In April of 2021, co-producer Mads Brinch Nielsen and I set up shop in the Sauna Studio in Frederiksberg, Denmark, and invited 10 of our favorite multi-instrumentalists to join us on our mission of bringing 12 songs to life – 10 of which would make it onto the final album. The recording process was inspired by the Daniel Lanois / Mark Howard productions for Bob Dylan and others, with everyone in the same room, and some musicians switching instruments on different songs to achieve different sounds. Everyone brought their creativity, open-mindedness, and unique musical gifts to the studio for five days of rehearsing and recording.
